Posted by BLLLINK on June 24, 2021, 2:53 a.m.

At this Covid-influenced ZOOM Death Cafe, 15 people from around the country dropped by to experience one of our more conversational monthly virtual Death Cafes.

The participants explored, questioned, shared and sometimes laughed as they easily and warmly welcomed meeting one another openly.

There was genuine acceptance of the sentiments voiced.

While we discussed the possibility of returning to the "face-to-face, sit around the tables" Death Cafe of pre-COVID times, most agreed the ZOOM format is a comfortable one and one that introduces people from a wider geographic area (past ZOOM Death Cafes have seen visitors from Canada, Australia and Europe, as well as other states).

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe in the Vineyards Bainbridge

Posted by BLLLINK on Sept. 16, 2019, 8:32 a.m.

We had our first vineyard Death Cafe at Nissley Vineyard in Pennsylvania. About 15 people attended, and we feasted on a 900lb Dutch Apple cake (maybe a little hyperbole here) in addition to a completely delectable peanut butter chocolate cake. The vineyard is a beautiful life-affirming, natural place, and it mirrored conversation that - though centered on death, dying and everything in between - was life-centric and death positive.

So what a great assembly of interesting people we had today.

27 interesting people with wonderful contributions coupled with special table facilitators, delicious cakes and coffee and tea presented by the delightful team at the Long Community proved to be a magical two hours.

During the wrap-up, one chimed, "Why can't we go for three hours?"

It was a great question, and we'll look at that the next time.

A few of the evening's participants have come to previous Death Cafes, but for most, it was the first time. We had a guest who lives in Mazatlén, Mexico.

Death Cafe write up: Oley Valley Community Library Death Cafe

Posted by BLLLINK on July 21, 2018, 6:20 p.m.

This morning's Death Cafe at the Oley Valley Community Library saw a small, but engaged, group of people together to share interesting, considered thoughts in spirited and caring conversation about end of life.

We shared cookies, coffee and an exceptionally beautiful and scrumptious peanut butter-chocolate cake.

Cake, tea & coffee are as central to the Death Cafe as the surprisingly candid, caring and shared observations. Yes, it's entirely possible, even probable, to strike bonds in only two hours.

This was the second Death Cafe at the intimate Oley Valley Community Library collaboratively facilitated by the Pennsylvania Link to Aging and Disability Resources Berks County partners' network.

Posted by BLLLINK on May 21, 2018, 6:44 a.m.

The room at the Charles F. Snyder Funeral Home on Lititz Pike was alive with simultaneous conversations from the people who came to the Death Cafe.

Two dozen people came together to share cake, coffee, tea and their thoughts about life, death and dying. Some knew one another, though most really matched the international Death Cafe's descriptive: the Death Cafe is a place where "people, often, strangers, gather to eat cake, drink tea and discuss death."

For just under two hours, that is exactly what happened.

What a great venue for a Death Cafe. Attending this second time Death Cafe were some residents, some second time attendees and lots of new Death Cafe first timers.

The conversations flowed at two separate tables. In all, more than 20 attended - some for the entire two hour of conversation; some less.

We are grateful to our facilitators, our guests and the exceptional staff at the Long Community who were so prepared for this event.

Death Cafe write up: Wyomissing Public Library's FIRST Death Cafe

Posted by BLLLINK on March 18, 2018, 7:06 p.m.

This was our very first death cafe at Wyomissing Public Library and our second Berks county, PA death cafe. There were a few return death cafe attendees in addition to new faces, and although we had a small group, the conversation was lively and engaging and covered a range of topics - having agency for your own death, considering those we leave behind, writing obituaries, what meaning there is (or is not) in visiting loved one’s graves, and so much more. We’re deeply grateful for our local death cafe community.

As we concluded, our Death Cafe attendees hugged and exchanged best wishes and regards.

We did enjoy cake, coffee, tea, chocolates and great conversation. Because five people cannot eat a cake ordered for a dozen, the Library staff reaped the uneaten cake and cookies.

As at the first Death Cafe, the staff at Tellus 360 were quite attentive and gracious as 12 people gathered about the two tables for conversation, cake, coffee and other libations.

Though we anticipated a few more, the folks who came together to meet and discuss the mysteries and the delights of life ... and death this night easily embraced the Death Cafe concept.

Everyone who attended echoed the sentiments of facilitators Jen and Meghan. "This was an very interesting evening."

Cake and cookies provided a perfect topping.

We had a great evening at Tellus THREE SIXTY. Really good conversations covering a broad array of topics at three separate tables.

Everyone echoed that the people they met were so interesting and the discussions were quite compelling.

We pretty much agreed we should hold another Death Cafe at Tellus THREE SIXTY ... and the folks there agreed.

We're looking an another in January, 2018.

We did enjoy an especially attractive cake along with cupcakes and chips & dip.

This was the fifth Death Cafe for Lebanon County this year.

In spite of a sweltering July afternoon, 20 people came together at the first ever Death Cafe in Mount Joy at the Milanof-Schock Public Library.

Thankful for the air-conditioned comfort of the Library, participants openly shared their thoughts and questions during the two-hour event.

We hasten to say "thank you" to facilitators, Meghan and Jeannie; the library staff and the Death Cafe attendees for their time, energies and collegiality.

Yesterday's was the fourth Death Cafe in Lancaster County in 2017 - the next is slated for September.
