New Blog post: Let's redesign grief together: an upcoming online workshop

Posted by Clo on June 24, 2022, 4:04 a.m.

How harmful is the taboo around death that prevents us from preparing to it and properly dealing with its aftermaths? How hurtful is the way our bereavement is dismissed?

We are left with few to no tools to face the huge emotional burden that comes with the loss of a loved one.

On the 28th of June, at 6PM (CET) will be hosted on zoom an open workshop about death and grief.

It aims to ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe - Kangaroo Point, Brisbane

Posted by Suzanne on June 23, 2022, 4:40 a.m.

Seven people attended our Death Cafe on 22 June 2022 in Kangaroo Point Brisbane, Australia. Conversation flowed freely for the full 90 minutes. Participants look forward to attending again on a regular basis. They appreciated the respect that filled the space, the sense of connection and the freedom to share with like-minded people about dying and death. It was felt that from talking about each others vulnerabilities around the topic of death, they could more easily identify what their needs were to approach their own inevitable death and the deaths of loved ones. They were pleased to receive relevant information and direction to resources to help fill their ...

Practitioners question: Collecting Info

Do other faciltators "take attendance" and/or keep track of attendees? How about asking them for contact info?

I can see ONLY ONE reason to do this: to be able to report if a participant is threatending self-harm, seeming to be a danger to self or others. Ugh.

What do ...

The FSJ Palliative Care Society hosted a small (11 people) but successful Death Cafe on June 1st.  The cafe, guided by Roz Smith - a local counsellor, had shorter but free flowing conversation about death and dying and how its impacts our lives.

Participants moved from group to group with about 4/5 changes during the course of the evening.  Conversations were focussed on the impact death has in our lives but the actual topics were very diverse, as is to be expected when addressing such a complex topic.

Participants agreed that this was a worthwhile endevour and so we will plan to have about 3 Death Cafes over ...

Death Cafe write up: Drogheda Death Cafe

Posted by DroghedaDeathCafe on May 31, 2022, 8:46 a.m.

We had a very heartwarming evening for our first Death cafe in Drogheda. 14 attendees, on top of 2 facilitators. Interesting topics for discussion including legacy and how we would like to be remembered, the importance of being prepared in terms of wishes and planning, options for funerals now that less traditional routes are becoming more mainstream, some interesting resources and books available online on death in general, the traumas that stay with us from our exposure to death from childhood.  A huge thanks to the Rugby club for sponsoring the venue.

I find I cannot choose what I believe; some things strike me as believable and others not.  The world presents its own truths, and I have integrity to the extent that my beliefs align with these truths and honesty to the extent that I openly avow them.

I cannot accept the concept of an immaterial human soul.  I cannot believe that my conscious self will survive my bodily death.  A life of reading and thinking ...
