As of today, October 27th, 2020, 69 out of every 100,000 people in the United States have died from Covid-19. Total deaths in the world are 1,161,422 (cnn.com). A few numbers on a page, many beautiful lives lived and lost. Rest in peace. It’s Halloween week 2020 and I mused months ago how dancing skeletons and these new facts of death might impact the holiday. Unknown. Stay Safe. I don’t want to fathom reporting something unimaginably scarier this time next year.

The two U.S. presidential candidates said recently regarding the pandemic, “…we’re learning to live with it,” and conversely ...

A world-renowned wise person once said, “some people need an enemy.” When I heard that I played out Robin Hood scenes of shields, swords, bows and arrows and blood. In the fog of horses kicking up dirt in my head I was no closer to solid ground. I knew I’d never felt or behaved as if I needed an enemy. An even more stunning revelation was that I knew I couldn’t be an enemy. To the aggressors perhaps that’s a win as I’d be appreciating the dappled sunlight through the trees as I lay face up, run through with a scabbard, my life force ...

The experience of having a parent die can jump start our thinking about our own mortality. At a recent Café an attendee mused, “it’s like a veil is gone, and you’re next.” We’ve talked a lot about how death related experiences in our youth either comfort us or leave us questioning. One woman discovered an entry in her departed mother’s diary recounting her own mother’s death, and realized that as a young teen she hadn’t been included in this major family event. Parents often struggle with whether to expose their children to death or not in an effort to protect them. Of ...

“If I go towards it (death), it’s incredible and informs my life.” “Anticipation is killing me... learning to embrace the whole thing from beginning to end…what I’ve learned, regrets, beauty, and being accountable to my friends. To go beyond who we’ve been, beyond fate.” Once I came up with these three words, “deliberate life completion,” I found freedom. Powerful statements from last week’s Café! Gratitude to all the bright embodied souls who visit our Tucson Café and share stories, struggles, and big life wisdom.

Wrestling with the ever-present dynamic of “doing and being” one person queried, “Why do I always have to be doing something, and what is enough?” Getting to the feeling of “it is enough,” can be a radical relief. For the questioner, the poem, “Theory of Memory,” by Louise Gluck, was illuminating.

“Long, long ago, before I was a tormented artist, afflicted with longing yet
incapable of forming durable attachments, long before this, I was a glorious ruler uniting all of a divided country—so I was told by the fortune-teller who examined my palm. Great things, she said, are ahead of you, or perhaps behind you; it is ...

“I always come away feeling more alive,” proclaimed a Death Café attendee. Kudos to the Café movement for opening space for the paradox of death and all the wild richness it brings to life!

Reflecting on the fact that her father was a Holocaust victim, one woman spoke of her wish for peace in her own death. As we know only too well with chaotic events, natural disasters, war, violence, pandemics, the possibility for peace in death may escape us. I wonder if spiritual traditions that “practice death” do so not only to affirm life and lessen fear while living, but also simply to have that experience of ...

A man was at the hospital with his wife who was nearing her departure. The circumstances of being at a hospital undergoing interventions were distressing and unwanted. The couple had imagined a peaceful passing at home. A nurse asked the man where his family was, and he replied they were all at the hospital. The nurse then said, “Home is where your family is.” This story was shared at a recent Café.

All the more poignant now, as even this – in the era of Covid – is denied. We thank all the hospitals, staff, emergency workers and caregivers for doing all they can to unite loved ones, and in ...

As we have in the past, perhaps now more than ever, we raised the subject of the many kinds of deaths we can experience outside of physical death. Certainly now, the death of life as we knew it, is a cause of a global chronic grief calling for mourning. I don’t think it’s wise or productive to compare losses and say one is more difficult than another. Every loss is entirely unique and personal. However, not all loss includes an existential component, which is certainly at play now with this global pandemic.

One person commented that he’s seen a lot of book titles related to ...

We’ve now had 7 Tucson Friendly and Fearless Death Cafés meeting virtually via zoom. I’ve hosted our local café for years and wasn’t sure how the virtual experience would be. We have all been excited by the “global Café front door” and have been joined by people from both coasts, areas outside Tucson in Arizona, and even London! It could be that the pandemic brings death closer to the bone for all of us, death looming larger than ever in our personal and planetary experience, but I’m finding our Café conversations arrestingly tender, filled with deep questioning, soul searching, and beautiful intimate sharing ...

This was our 3rd Virtual Cafe. For the first time since this pandemic began, 2 attendees reported family members or friends who have died. So very challenging and sad for all. I'll speak for everyone and say that the value of the Cafe conversation is immeasurable. To say what is true and real for each of us, look around, and be held in the moment by others is so preciously human. Some paraphrased comments: "struggling with the notion of not-being...trying to be familiar with living and death at the same time...being here (at cafe) makes me feel comfortable...you can't know, yet the paradox ...
