Today was a small group of 5, plus Anna and I, and I was pleased to see three people who returned for more Death Café! I asked if we could consider this a compliment – and the tongue-in-cheek retort was “well you obviously didn’t answer our questions well enough the first time!”
We explored some different topics today including our fragmented health system, and how (for example) when caring for a loved one, there is a lot of ‘project managing’ – that the role of ‘overseer’ is vital and sometimes, but not always, held by the GP. This segued into grief and how much support is available. It was ...

It was a sunny but cold winter day today in Amberley and we had five people – two couples, and the conversation was lively and robust. After sharing thoughts and musings, and general kōrero, we honed in on two main questions – what do you do when your loved one dies? Bluntly put: “if I wake up and my partner has died, what do I do?” We travelled down the ‘expected death’ pathway and the ‘unexpected death’ pathway. The other discussion was around natural burials, eco burials and green burials – what are they? What are the differences? And where in Canterbury can these happen?
Great stuff!
Until again, Liz

Kaiapoi (21.07.2024)
Today was a big group – 11 plus Anna and I, once we got over our initial shock and delight, it was a busy kōrero which darted all over the place! I had co-delivered a workshop the weekend before about reducing death costs and some of those attendees came along - so this was the initial talking point. We chatted about expectations of funeral costs – such as who pays for visitors and travellers to the funeral, what is the custom in NZ – in fact, is there a custom at all? We chatted about ashes and how to scatter these – do we have the freedom to scatter ...

It was a cold day today and Rangiora’s meeting room is such a great venue for Death Café. We had a small group today, just four of us, all women – and one returning attendee and her friend, awesome, I love the country grapevine!
We were quite explorative and thoughtful today – one of us talked about living in a close Māori community for 10 years and how well the tangihanga gives grief time, space, a process, and a community.
I mentioned too that I had been to the Grief Centre’s ‘Let’s talk about Grief’ conference in Auckland on Friday, we explored the theme and complexities of ...

It’s beginning to get a little cooler now and, as often, the Kaiapoi library is such a great venue for Death café along the river. We had a small group today, just four of us, all women – and one returning attendee, which is always lovely.
The vibe was calm and thoughtful and being a small group allowed us to dig deeper into some interesting topics, we talked a lot about “who owns the dying process?” – by which we explored all aspects of being close to someone who is dying – do they know they’re dying; do they have the right to know? do they want to know ...

Amberley
It was a lovely ambient afternoon in North Canterbury and Amberley's first DC of the year. Including Mark and myself we had 5 people, 3 men and 2 women.
The vibe was energectic and the conversation deep - about grief and loss, death and dying as concepts, theroretical and anecdotal, observed and experienced. It was a heady afternoon and very stimulating, different in a way from other DCs.
Pretty awesome!
Look forward to next time, Kaiapoi on April 21st.
Liz ;)

Death Café in North Canterbury recently, in Rangiora (17.09.2023)
We held our monthly Death Café North Canterbury – it was a quieter meeting, just three souls but this gave room for an in-depth discussions and insights. We explored whether there was a pattern here: when one spouse dies, the other spouse is not invited out as much? We thought this happens a lot and shared many stories of friends and family where this has occurred – and that they experienced effectively a ‘double grief’?
Stay well and keep talking, Liz :)

We held our monthly Death Café North Canterbury – it was a thoughtful meeting again with seven of us; we discussed funerals and who are these really for – and does it help with grieving? We discussed NODA - have you heard of this? It’s an innovative project from up north (although an age-old concept) – No One Dies Alone. It gave us all food for thought!
Stay well and keep talking, Liz :)

Death Café in North Canterbury recently, in Amberley (16.07.2023)
We held our second Amberley Death Café North Canterbury – it was a quiet, intimate and tender meeting, four of us talking about connecting, why we don’t talk much in society about death and dying; and the purpose of a funeral. loud, busy affair!
It was a reflective and inner feeling that stayed with me throughout the rest of the day.
Stay well and warm; and keep talking, Liz :)

We held our second Rangiora Death Café North Canterbury – it was a loud, busy affair! We were a group of 9 and noises were made when we discussed the eye-watering prices of funerals. We talked about many different options, shopping around and talking through what is wanted, what matters and just exactly who is the funeral for.
It was a great discussion about the practicalities of life and death – and certainly sent me home with plenty of homework and research to do.
Stay well and warm; and keep talking, Liz :)

We held our second Death Café North Canterbury recently at Kaiapoi library – it was a smaller affair with just two people, a lovely elderly couple, which meant we could really drill down into some very practical and personal issues – and it meant a ¼ of the delicious chocolate each! (no - we didn’t!)
It was a great discussion about the practicalities of life and death – and certainly sent me home with plenty of homework and research to do.

Death Café North Canterbury took place for the first time in Amberley last month (23.04.2023) with myself and Mark as your facilitators. We had a record number of bookings (ok, so we didn’t make double figures but hey, it’s early days!) We did set a small record though – we had more men than women this time.
The cake, chocolates, conversation, kōrero and sense of community was special, our themes traversed accepting ‘bad and sad’ news, palliative care options and end of life choice law and decision-making; looking back in time and how death was talked about (or not) in the past.
It was a ...

We had our second Death Café in North Canterbury recently, this time in Rangiora library – and yes, I managed to not drop the cake this time...it was great….the cake and the korero! We had seven of us this week, we covered many themes – from how to talk to children about death and dying, to whether men and women deal with grief differently; to whether there is anything ‘beyond’ – any sense of an afterlife. It was a good hearty discussion which left us with a sense of sharing some of life’s deeper thoughts.
