Thoughts for sharing:

Hmmm...so many wisdom, quotes and opinions out there - it depends on my mood and the circumstance as to which well-loved quote or saying fits at any one time.

However, any quote that reminds me to be stay present and in-the-moment is good!

And this one:

Death is not the opposite of life, but part of it.

Death Café in North Canterbury recently, in Rangiora (17.09.2023)

We held our monthly Death Café North Canterbury – it was a quieter meeting, just three souls but this gave room for an in-depth discussions and insights. We explored whether there was a pattern here: when one spouse dies, the other spouse is not invited out as much? We thought this happens a lot and shared many stories of friends and family where this has occurred – and that they experienced effectively a ‘double grief’?

Stay well and keep talking, Liz :)

We held our monthly Death Café North Canterbury – it was a thoughtful meeting again with seven of us; we discussed funerals and who are these really for – and does it help with grieving? We discussed NODA - have you heard of this? It’s an innovative project from up north (although an age-old concept) – No One Dies Alone. It gave us all food for thought!

Stay well and keep talking, Liz :)

Death Café in North Canterbury recently, in Amberley (16.07.2023)

We held our second Amberley Death Café North Canterbury – it was a quiet, intimate and tender meeting, four of us talking about connecting, why we don’t talk much in society about death and dying; and the purpose of a funeral. loud, busy affair!

It was a reflective and inner feeling that stayed with me throughout the rest of the day.

Stay well and warm; and keep talking, Liz :)

We held our second Rangiora Death Café North Canterbury – it was a loud, busy affair! We were a group of 9 and noises were made when we discussed the eye-watering prices of funerals. We talked about many different options, shopping around and talking through what is wanted, what matters and just exactly who is the funeral for.

It was a great discussion about the practicalities of life and death – and certainly sent me home with plenty of homework and research to do.

Stay well and warm; and keep talking, Liz :)

We held our second Death Café North Canterbury recently at Kaiapoi library – it was a smaller affair with just two people, a lovely elderly couple, which meant we could really drill down into some very practical and personal issues – and it meant a ¼ of the delicious chocolate each! (no - we didn’t!)

It was a great discussion about the practicalities of life and death – and certainly sent me home with plenty of homework and research to do.

Death Café North Canterbury took place for the first time in Amberley last month (23.04.2023) with myself and Mark as your facilitators. We had a record number of bookings (ok, so we didn’t make double figures but hey, it’s early days!) We did set a small record though – we had more men than women this time.

The cake, chocolates, conversation, kōrero and sense of community was special, our themes traversed accepting ‘bad and sad’ news, palliative care options and end of life choice law and decision-making; looking back in time and how death was talked about (or not) in the past.

It was a ...

We had our second Death Café in North Canterbury recently, this time in Rangiora library – and yes, I managed to not drop the cake this time...it was great….the cake and the korero! We had seven of us this week, we covered many themes – from how to talk to children about death and dying, to whether men and women deal with grief differently; to whether there is anything ‘beyond’ – any sense of an afterlife. It was a good hearty discussion which left us with a sense of sharing some of life’s deeper thoughts.

Onwards and upwards, see you in Amberley on 23rd April, 2pm,

We had our very first Death Cafe in North Canterbury recently, in Kaiapoi. Despite torrential rain, cold and the fact I dropped the pear cake...it was great!

We had two attendees and two facilitators, talked non stop about our beliefs, our experiences and societal perspectives.

Onwards and upwards, Rangiora next time,

Stay well and keep talking n hugging, Liz :)
