Death Cafe write up: Love Walk London Death Cafe

A group of local strangers met recently to take part in Camberwell’s first Death Café motivated by a variety of reasons but sharing a common desire to talk openly about a subject that is important to us all but still relatively taboo. There was a lot of laughter, some wonderful periods of silence and a lot of practical and also profound conversation. There was also homemade apple cake to nourish us!

Asked to choose words at the end of the gathering to describe the café, participants said it was welcoming, thought provoking, supportive, positive, friendly, honest, safe, disinhibiting, helpful, clarifying, open, uplifting and revealing.

I had been worried that no-one would turn up for our inaugural meeting so a friend agreed to come with me,  just so I wouldn't be on my own.

As it was, the publicity worked and we were joined by four others, all with various degrees of curiosity and trepidation.

Tea and cake helped relax everyone as I explained what Death Cafe is and soon everyone was chatting and contributing to the discussion.

Having 'that's conversation with loved ones,  reminiscences of older funeral customs and green burials were all touched on, among other things.

Next meeting is 10th April 2023 at Networks of Wellbeing  from 1-3pm ...

Death Cafe write up: Virtual Death Cafe EST

It has been three years of hosting Death Cafes online (thanks to Covid), and we are always delighted with the heart felt conversations shared and the wide range of topics discussed.  Death touches everyone and so much of our experiences truly are universal.

Grief, rituals, pet loss, what to say to someone bereaved (and what not to say), stories of loss, future wishes, what makes a good death, saying goodbye, how we all grieve differently, expectations, questions posed, students joining to learn, folks from across the country and other countries, men and women, young through to seniors ..... life and death and everything in between and following is an ...

Death Cafe write up: Wilton Just Friends Death Cafe

Our group met at one of the participants homes, we all brought either sweets, tea or other beverage and talked for well over two hours about a range of things. We discussed wills, alternatives to cremation and traditional burrials, the idea of being and not being.

There was a follow up meeting at another participants homes, and the discussion was much more focused and reviewed and discussed the process of cremation, state laws and talking with family about final wishes. A brief film was shown on the process of cremation.

Another great time with conversations from those who attended. We chatted about the recent open day at the Crematorium and whether we'd like to be present even on that final journey of helping our loved one enter the cremator furnace; we discussed what happens to the body when we die; whether we might be willing to look after our loved one at home rather than them going to the funeral undertaker. All this with a hefty bowl of tomato rissoto. What's not to like? humour, discussion and food.

We had a lovely group of 11 people (including facilitators) and we discussed the issues encountered with family while dealing with grief, how a loss can suddenly impact relationships with siblings and other family members. Talking about legacy with one's family, especially children was also a subject we touched on.

Our first session in our great new space was filled with lots of tea, muffins and great conversation- exploring topics such as: How would we change the way we live if we only had 6 months left.

Ten folks gathered for a pleasant evening talking about death. The participants broke into two groups, with a half-hour at the end for the full group to gather and share.

We expected more people, but the weather had other plans!

Is death something that elicits terror or excitement or both? As author Michael Singer says, “Let’s just let it be something to look forward to as the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

One Café goer described how his wife was not able to complete her dying, and was sent back here to Earth school to clear up her two “voodoo dolls,” grudges she was holding with two people in her life. Having spent a lot of time in the NDE, near-death-experience space, he said that many who have had NDEs report wanting to die, to continue to move on, because they felt such peace and beauty on the other ...

The community centre I work at in Exeter is considering starting a Death Cafe due to Cruse losing lots of funding leading to a lack of provision in the city for people exploring grief and death.
