What brings you to Death Cafe?
Most Australians consider talking about death and dying as important however many don't actively think, talk or prepare for death. Ironically, we plan for other life events: births, weddings, buying a house; a car, taking a holiday - yet many don't plan for dying and death. An event that wil affect 100% of us. So Death Cafes provide an avenue for open, interesting discussions that can benefit the well, the dying and the bereaved.
What would you like your legacy to be?
That talking about death and dying becomes a natural intrinsic part of our everyday life.
Thoughts for sharing:
You matter because you are you;
And you matter to the last moment of your life.
We will do al we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.

11 attendees from across Australia and internationally. Great discussions around demystifying death, the importance of increasing our community's death literacy; learning the art of celebrating life and that death is part of life. And an interesting two new themes - one on death related to domestic violence and the importance of counsellors being comfortable to talk about death; and also how to education financial planners who engage with persons who have been just diagnosed with a life limiting condition; or are nearing end of life and have a terminal diagnosis - and better understanding the range of emotions and choices that may influence how people save/spend ...

A small intimate group of 6 of us - connecting virtually across 2 states of Australia. No international attendees this time. We spoke about euphemisms and that a few of us believed that using the words that the bereaved person was most comfortable about was 'good enough' with one example of how a family had told me (as their Funeral Celebrant) to please not use the word "died" but instead "passed away" in one section of the ceremony. They felt it was 'softer' and less raw for them. We had attendees who were pastoral care, support worker residential aged care, End of Life Doulas, pall care volunteers ...

Death Cafe write up: South-East Brisbane Death Cafe
Posted by Jacqui on Aug. 7, 2019, 12:11 a.m.

On our national Dying2Know Day we had a total of 11 attend our August South-East Brisbane Death Cafe (8/8/19) . Once again it was a very diverse group of both curious and interested people wanting to talk about all things death and dying... The feedback from participants continues to be positive as we strive to deliver a Death Cafe that would make founder (the late) Jon Underwood proud of. So what did we talk about?
- advance care planning and family discussions (exploring with not just ageing parents but also with our adult children as we age)
- DonateLife - organ and tissue transplantation and donation of our bodies to ...

Ten wonderfully diverse people met up on 13th June on a crisp cool Brisbane evening night... a mixture of ages, genders, interests and life experiences - which blended so well and left people enthused to continue talking about how death and dying are part of life; and how it has affected their lives. How we all need to talk about it. Plan proactively for it. And learn from it.
As always the topics were wide ranging and included discussions about unexpected and expected deaths and their profound impact upon our lives. Death when young... death when older. The impact of grief and loss not only for the dying person ...

Death Cafe write up: South-East Brisbane Death Cafe
Posted by Jacqui on April 14, 2019, 8:32 p.m.

It was with a mixture of excitement and a few nerves that I - with some like-minded friends - launched into our first South-East Brisbane Death Cafe last week (12 April 2019)...
With a wonderful eclectic group of people - of all ages - we met over a cuppa and light refreshments and talked about such a rich variety of death and dying topics and experiences.
Topics included :
- facing one's own / questioning one's own mortality
- importance of advance care planning documents and conversations and the positive impact that can be made
- place of death and importance of supporting dying at home
- dying on your own terms; acknowledging that not every ...
