About Jacqui:

Jacqui Wiliams is an End of Life Doula, Public Speaker & Funeral Celebrant who is passionate about encouraging conversations about death and dying with the aim to liberate communities to purposefully prepare for end of life.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

Most Australians consider talking about death and dying as important however many don't actively think, talk or prepare for death. Ironically, we plan for other life events: births, weddings, buying a house; a car, taking a holiday - yet many don't plan for dying and death. An event that wil affect 100% of us. So Death Cafes provide an avenue for open, interesting discussions that can benefit the well, the dying and the bereaved.

What would you like your legacy to be?

That talking about death and dying becomes a natural intrinsic part of our everyday life.

Thoughts for sharing:

You matter because you are you;

And you matter to the last moment of your life.

We will do al we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but also to live until you die.

20 August 2021 - a small intimate group of 6 of us meeting face 2 face which is a joy these days, despite the wearing of indoor masks. Always fascintating people coming to these events. I think they are already the curious and the 'converted' as they are so willing to share amongst strangers. We talked about

- normalising death, putting one's affairs in order;

- what is an End of Life Doula

- documents to complete (advance care planning)

- death isn't always scaring and caring for the dying is a privilege

- NDE and not being frightened about dying

- new pathways for learning - meditation, Buddhism etc

- the Banshee wail

- books ...

10 Aug 2021. A small group of 3 of us but what energy, passion, enthusiasm and curiosity! And celebrating a belated Dying to Know Day. Themes discussed included

·        Aged care – where death and dying is commonplace but families are still shocked by the suddenness of death;

·        where conversations are easily welcomed in all settings of life; and where the dying person may not feel comfortable, or may be fearful, to engage in talking about death (their death) and their own dying; or may not be asked how they are feeling. And often the family/loved ones aren’t asked or supported along the way. (We have a long ...

8 July 2021 - small group of 4 - but rich discussion. Themes and topics included discussions about: Interesting books

were were reading e.g. “We all know how this ends”; the complexity of grief and loss from a sudden death; that navigating different

family dynamics and organising a funeral can be complex; that different people may need different types of information; and react in

their own way to loss and grief. And knowing a person’s wishes is difficult when they haven’t had discussions or left any instructions

. That there continues to still be pockets of the community where people feel a lot of ...

8 June 2021 - Virtual DC. We shared our experiences about ‘being present’, the importance of demystifying death and dying and

normalising it; how we are curious about Death Cafes and also about engaging in the space; the language and the communication ski

lls that we can use to engage in this interesting area; and that it is often a relief for someone to have the opportunity to have these

discussions which can create an avenue for story-telling and rituals; that health professionals aren’t always skilled at having these

conversations (some more than others). We all are as ‘qualified’ as each other to potentially talk about death and ...

13 May 2021 - Small group of 5 interesting women spanning a variety of ages, backgrounds and life experiences. We shared our experiences about

  • that the experience of dying can be “a beautiful thing”; and the value of ‘holding space’; ‘being present’ and also sharing laughter along the way . All this as long as it is ‘legal, safe, sane and consensual)
  • a discussion around unexpected deaths – and a myriad of emotions attached with this ranging from quality of life – if we could choose to die suddenly then wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing? To the impact of unexpected deaths on the living – how we interpret sudden deaths (positive ...

They openly shared their experiences, questions and were so authentic in opening up about the topic many are 'scared' or adverse to talk about...death...dying. It was a wonderful one and a half hours . We shared information and stories about

  • "being present' that dying and death is not all terrible, it can be profoundly beautiful ("the beautiful and terrible")
  • demystifying death and dying and normalising it
  • conversation starter tools
  • that a life-limiting condition can give us an opportunity to discuss and plan our wishes, our funerals and better prepare ...

Sept 2020

11 attendees from across Australia and internationally. Great discussions around demystifying death, the importance of increasing our community's death literacy; learning the art of celebrating life and that death is part of life. And an interesting two new themes - one on death related to domestic violence and the importance of counsellors being comfortable to talk about death; and also how to education financial planners who engage with persons who have been just diagnosed with a life limiting condition; or are nearing end of life and have a terminal diagnosis - and better understanding the range of emotions and choices that may influence how people save/spend ...

November 2020

A small intimate group of 6 of us - connecting virtually across 2 states of Australia. No international attendees this time. We spoke about euphemisms and that a few of us believed that using the words that the bereaved person was most comfortable about was 'good enough' with one example of how a family had told me (as their Funeral Celebrant) to please not use the word "died" but instead "passed away" in one section of the ceremony. They felt it was 'softer' and less raw for them. We had attendees who were pastoral care, support worker residential aged care, End of Life Doulas, pall care volunteers ...

Once again it was a very diverse group of both curious and interested people wanting to talk about all things death and dying... The feedback from participants continues to be positive as we strive to deliver a Death Cafe that would make founder (the late) Jon Underwood proud of. So what did we talk about?

- advance care planning and family discussions (exploring with not just ageing parents but also with our adult children as we age)

13 June 2019 Ten wonderfully diverse people met up on 13th June on a crisp cool Brisbane evening night... a mixture of ages, genders, interests and life experiences - which blended so well and left people enthused to continue talking about how death and dying are part of life; and how it has affected their lives. How we all need to talk about it. Plan proactively for it. And learn from it.

As always the topics were wide ranging and included discussions about unexpected and expected deaths and their profound impact upon our lives. Death when young... death when older. The impact of grief and loss not only for ...

12 April 2019 It was with a mixture of excitement and a few nerves that I - with some like-minded friends - launched into our first South-East Brisbane Death Cafe last week (12 April 2019)...

With a wonderful eclectic group of people - of all ages - we met over a cuppa and light refreshments and talked about such a rich variety of death and dying topics and experiences.

Topics included :

- facing one's own / questioning one's own mortality

- importance of advance care planning documents and conversations and the positive impact that can be made

- place of death and importance of supporting dying at home

- dying on your own terms; acknowledging ...
