A rainy Autumnal evening was brightened up by our first meeting with new hosts and a wonderful group of people.
We are lucky to have such a supportive cafe Cox and Baloneys Tearoom who fully understand what we are trying to do. We had a cosy room,tea and cake (of course!).
A quick introduction led into fascinating ideas,experiences, hopes and wishes towards life and death. Animated conversations sprang up and I was impressed with the groups sensitivity towards topics and each other. Conversations became profound, exploratory and there was also laughter....in fact time went so quickly we all felt we could have talked and shared ...

We met at a new location, the Heartland Unitarian Universalist Church, and 8 of us gathered for a spirited conversation over coffee, tea and an autumn cake. Topics included suicide, loss of our parents and society's fear of talking about death.
We will meet at this location for the final cafe of the year to be held on Sunday December 17 from 2 pm to 4 pm.

We were very pleased with this death cafe session and shared wonderful conversations with a beautiful group of insightful women.
Some great feedback was gathered by the group and included comments such as:
" The Death Cafe experience was open, enlightening and empowering"
" The structure of the discussion had a beautoful organic flow"
"The event affected my feelings about death with me now having less fear and have a more open mind"
When asked what they would tell people who were interested in attending a future Death Cafe the participants said:
"I would recommend it. I would encourage it"
" Make an effort... give it a go"
"Do it!!!"
"Go!!!"
Hi, everyone! I was wondering if anyone else has used flyers to help promote their cafe. I'm looking for ways to promote mine, the third coming this Novemeber, and I'd like to make some, but thought I'd ask you all with more experience first.

30th September 2017
We had 10 women arrive for this cafe. The conversation was lively and passionate regarding preparation for end of life - what is our list of 'to-dos'; what are some worthwhile films to watch; why we are all at this gathering and can we have more. The time seemed to fly.
Our conversations went on over time and there seemed to be great interest in further cafes.
Looks like we might try a regular cafe.

I want to thank everyone who showed up to the Death Cafe' today. We had a good sharing about experiences, insights, and lessons about death and dying. Some of the ideas shared included a recommendation to watch a movie "Departures", suggestions to read a magazine called Lion's Roar - The November issue has an article called "Death: The Greatest Teacher", a discussion about hospital care, palliative care, re-suscitation, or allowing a patient to have a natural death. Also mentioned was dying as a relief of suffering. We also shared poems, cakes, tea and cider.

Today's participants were a mixture of medical students from the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th year. We talked about our own experiences of death, both medical and personal, in a care free manner with occasional laughter.
A few topics that arose in the discussion were the lack of knowledge about the palliative care profession and also lack of a good salary in Japan. Yet most of the participants expressed an interest in working in palliative care with psychiatry as a subinterest. One participant remarked that she could not work in a more popular profession such as pediatrics as it's so bright and cheerful that could see ...

People are often surprised when they learn of my love-hate relationship with the term “Celebration of Life.”
"But you're a Celebrant!" they say. "Doesn't that mean you like to celebrate?"
Well, yes...and no. It depends.
Let’s take a look at Google’s definition of the word:

As always, each meeting is different, and this one was very special. It was a small group of previous attendees and new ones and the conversation ranged from the philosophical to the downright funny. In fact, this gathering disproved the idea that talking about death is somehow morbid and depressing. We're all looking forward to October's session.

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Taunton

On 9 September, Death Cafe Taunton held their second meeting at the Creative Innovation Centre in Taunton, hosted by Nicole Stanfield Caile. The event was well-attended by about thirty people. Conversation went on long after the original ending time for the event. People were eager to share their experiences and talk on a variety of topics. Wallace Stuart Funeral Directors brought a beautiful Ashes into Glass display, and attendees could also view the progress on Nicole's embroidered shroud.
As always, the venue was perfect and great conversation and cake was had by all. The next Death Cafe Taunton event will be planned for January.
