About Candy Penfold:

Candy Penfold has been working with the dying in several different careers over 15 years, and has been regularly volunteering in her local Medway community for the past 7. She is currently studying to become an End Of Life Doula with Living Well Dying Well, under the instruction of the brilliant Hermione Elliott.

She is one of the founding members of "The Brown Bread Collective" (see link), who are a group of people in Medway all dedicated to improving the conversations, knowledge and choices around death and dying, and breaking the taboos around talking about grief and death.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

End of life doula UK

What would you like your legacy to be?

To be remembered, and to be remembered as being kind and good and making a difference to even just one person that was positive.

Thoughts for sharing:

The worst thing you can do to the bereaved is to avoid them. Most people do, not out of heartlessnes, but because they don't know what to say. Ib response to that, I'd only say, the worst thing has already happened to them. The worst thing that could possibly happen has happened, their loved one is dead. Nothing you can say will make their world any worse than it already is, if your intensions are right. Be prepared to just be there and say nothing as well - that is so much better than avoiding. And if you really want help in knowing what to say, come to a death cafe!
