How can people take more profound actions against discrimination? New research findings could pave the way for equity - beyond the category of gender.

This question was raised by Mel Stiller and Andrés Di Masso from the Department of Social Psychology at the University of Barcelona. The researchers found that a more positive evaluation of one's own mortality was associated with less gender discrimination. Although their results require further research, they start to indicate ...

New Blog post: Death of Bernard Crettaz

Posted by Jools Barsky on Jan. 28, 2024, 4:27 p.m.

Hello Death Cafe community,

Today, I feel a deep need to share something profoundly personal and significant with you all. I have been reflecting on the legacy of Bernard Crettaz, born 29 May 1938, who died on 28 November 2022 aged 84. Bernard, a visionary Swiss sociologist, founded the Café Mortels—a concept that revolutionised how we speak about death and dying.

It was an article in the Independent about Bernard's Café Mortel in ...

Over carrot cake, vegan choclolate cookies and tea 19 of us discussed a range of topics from how climate change might affect how-when we die, what do you say when talking to a friend who is grieving (listen!), and the widespread misperception that dying makes you a saint (it just isn't so!). We discussed the range of feelings that arise after a loved one dies--not.much different than the range of feelings we had when they were alive. We also talked about green burial options in Oregon and SW Washington.

Our next cafe is February 7 at the Friends Meeting House at 6:30 p.m. For ...

Six people attended this Death Cafe, all of them newbies to the experience. Most were either working in a related industry or had training in a related area and therefore felt very comfortable in the space. Lots of topics discussed and experiences shared in our kōrero, especially about advance care planning, natural burial, responses to expected deaths and sudden deaths, embalming versus other cooling methods, the confusion around legal paperwork and how to claim sovereignty of your own death care and bring it back into the domain of the community.
The conversation flows organically, the knowledge we share is phenomenal.
Thank you to Sheepworld Cafe for being amazing ...

My name is Jasmin McGee... my heart is so full, and I am so humbled that my very first Peace with Death Cafe gathering was a success! PJ's Coffee in Spring Branch, TX was amazing and so hospitable. We were all comfortable and had the back corner all to ourselves. We discussed the Community Agreements. We had coffee and King Cake provided by PJ's Coffee. We shared and held space for one another. We had some serious talks and we laughed. Everyone who attended left smiling and grateful - not realizing how much they needed this time and these conversations. Next month's offering is scheduled and ...

Another great Death Cafe filled with a variety of conversation. I've titled this post "Where do we go?" because this theme nails the nature of the topics:

- Where do we go in that last ebbing time?

- Where do we go as a generation taking care of older parents- while aging ourselves?

- Where do we go in making living communities that help people have their best last years of this life?

More to come!

Death Cafe write up: Virtual Death Cafe Iowa

We had a vitual Death Café on December 19, 2023 via Zoom. Elliott from Iowa Death Collective facilitated the café with two people attending. In our short discussion, we talked about funerals and deaths occurring during the holidays and how people cope. It was also mentioned that sometimes time doesn’t even help enjoy the holidays. This time included a brief conversation about the need for more events pertaining to certain types of causes of death, because people do find comfort being around others who have had similar significant losses. Discussing disposition of our bodies was briefly mentioned. We finished the café discussing requirements for funeral homes in ...

Our discussions have navigated through the intricacies of sensitive topics, from diagnosis of life threatening and terminal illness to the profound impact of ...
