Death Cafe write up: Colliers Wood Death Cafe - April 2019

4 of us attended including one person for whom it was their first time attending a Death Cafe. We shared a generously iced carrot cake (GAIL's Bakery recipe). We opened the meeting with a brief reminder about confidentiality and respect for people's stories.

Themes emerging from our discussion:

Crisis situations and hasty decisions - the importance of choice, autonomy, and independence, and the role of an informed advocate in an emergency medical/hospital scenario.

Tragic unexpected and unplanned-for deaths vs. Statement of Wishes - why do we not get prompted to give this thought as we take out a mortgage or write our Wills?

This meeting marked our first birthday or the anniversary of our opening the CWDC. 5 of us met, including 2 of us who had not attended before and we enjoyed a delicious Victoria sponge! Of the newcomers, one person was totally new to Death Cafe, and another was a researcher for whom it was her 8th time at a London Death Cafe.

The importance of having spaces to reflect on our relationship with the one inevitability in life. The taboos around talking about death. People's difficulty / reluctance / refusal to approach the subject. People feeling very uncomfortable for the topic of conversation to ...

Three of us met and began our discussion exploring where each of us find ourselves in relation to death and dying, and what it is that we have been thinking about.

Wills, Executors, and Powers of Attorney are things that we have been giving a lot of consideration to, both at Death Cafe and elsewhere.

We went on to talk about the regularity with which things seem to come out when someone has died, and our shared experience of secrets and surprises after death. We spoke about the importance of finding opportunities to share our wishes with those we care about ahead of time.

We had such a beautiful location- This chapel is full of Tiffany Windows!The woodworking and all the touches were exquisite. It was a cool-ish day, but we satt farthest from the open door. We wanted that huge wood door to be open to welcome any late comers.

We ended up just making one small discussion group of 5. It was nice to be so intimate as we had Jen Ward, the librarian from Bach Branch for Albany, who would start hosting her own Death Cafes. We had a nice group of 13 folks gathered in Guilderland Library's largest room. As usual, we sat in groups of 4. People were so involved in their group talks we could hardly break away to share with the others some of what each group discussed. We had people volunteer to scout locations, help host the next one. We even have a couple that professionally designed our flyer for our next one on Monday evening - September 23rd Death Cafe!

The August 2019 Upminster Death Cafe was a surprise success as I feared due to the summer holidays people might have been away or not come. I was pleasantly surprised by the fab turnout and that we had a few new attendees too. A great range of topics discussed but a particular highlight was the topic raised by one attendee of the idea of a ‘death day’ each year. Very interesting!

What a great event we had! I had hoped for a great turnout and there really was. We discussed a huge range of topics but i felt it largely focused on the purpose and ideaology behind death cafe and the death positivity movement which I think really helped me feel these events are worthwhile.

For anyone who struggles to locate the event, I will be better with signposting in the future.

We had a great night Tuesday with a room full of lovely people! If you missed us, be sure to watch our page for the next date and location. 

It seems literature in death was a big topic of the evening. One absolutely gorgeous book in the works, waiting to be published, was lovingly shared, and tears were shed. We can't wait to promote it when it comes out, so BOLO! Death Cafe Wien hatte seinen 3. Geburtstag. Ein persönlicher und berührenden Austausch über Bestattungswünsche, Bestattungsvorsorge und wie lebensverkürzende Krankheiten die Einstellung zum Leben verändern waren unter Anderem zentrale Themen bei unserem Austausch. 8 Aug 2019 On our national Dying2Know Day we had a total of 11 attend our August South-East Brisbane Death Cafe (8/8/19) . Once again it was a very diverse group of both curious and interested people wanting to talk about all things death and dying... The feedback from participants continues to be positive as we strive to deliver a Death Cafe that would make founder (the late) Jon Underwood proud of. So what did we talk about?
