About Amanda Allen:

I am studying to become a death doula and find our culture's utter fear and refusal to talk about death interesting. I want to learn why others feel the way they do.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I want to provide a safe place for people to discuss their thoughts and ideas on death. I think that opening up a forum, especially in a progressive place like Seattle, will help our society find an acceptance of death.

What would you like your legacy to be?

To help people understand that life is precious, and if we let ourselves live fully we will have no reason to fear death.

Thoughts for sharing:

From all I've learned, it's just to live everyday like it is your last and if you are about to leave this world, put imporance into telling people what you think. It's ok to be scared, and it's ok to grieve, but we all have to do it.

This Death Cafe was very enlightening about what people percieve as success in life, and how the preceding generation to ours found attachment in things over experience. We discussed how anxiety can prevent people from living, and how our attachment to things can do the same. We talked about the surprise of death, or how people will allow themselves to seem more needy than they might be because they're afraid of being forgotten if they stop needing help.
Our group is beautiful and sweet, and I believe most of us left with thoughts on how we can minimalize our belongings to the imortant things and leave our ...

This was a really great experience. We had a mix of personalities at our first death cafe.
There were a lot of questions about end of life planning, and a couple of the attendees said that after hearing some stories, they wanted to do more planning of their end of life wishes.
I hope next time that we focus more on the metaphysical and religious aspects of death but I loved the practical questions. After all, that's the reason I started my journey on this path.
Next time we are holding it in a different venue to see if a different parking situation encourages more attendees. All ...
