Nice change of scene for today's gathering - we had a picnic at Allambie Park Natural Burial Area. Around eighteen of us got together, complete with chairs, tables (even a lace tablecloth) and of course, our Thermoses and cake.
Given the location, it's not surprising that the discussion today largely centred on funeral options, including relative costs, the range of caskets available and build-your-own coffin projects.
We talked at length about Natural Earth Burial - what it is (interment in a fully biodegradable coffin, with no synthetic materials, in a relatively shallow, minimally marked grave), how it came about in our region (extensive lobbying around 6-7 years ago ...

What a wonderful Death Café gathering we had yesterday!
Death and its proximity was particularly front-of-mind as several of our long-term participants had very recently lost people close to them. In this difficult time, it was so touching to hear of the ways Death Café had helped prepare them for something none of us really wants to face, but we will all have to. This lead many of us to share stories about the deaths of people we cared about and, in turn, turned to speculation about whether someone who is dying is helped and comforted by being 'given permission' to let go, to stop resisting the inevitable ...

A particularly loud and lively gathering today!
We spent part of the session in a single group of about 12 and part split into two or three groups, so the conversation was wide-ranging, coming together as the numbers dwindled to share our experiences of the afternoon.
Several of us had seen the film 'Alive Inside' earlier in the week (about music and dementia) and we talked about how that might also relate to palliative and end-of-life care, which linked into discussions about the sorts of things that evoke special, pleasurable memories for us - particular songs/music, favourite perfumes, the aromas of foods our mothers or grandmothers cooked.
