Eighteen people came out in October. Most were new attendees and the mean age was about 45. It was a very special night, as Death Cafes seem to be. People voiced coming for a variety of reasons including: to help them get motivated to get their affairs in order, for the opportunity to learn and understand, for the chance to share their experiences, and to help themselves come to terms with their limited time. Thank you to all that came out --it was lovely to have both new and seasoned participants at the first Death Cafe of the fall. Someone summed it up as a "simple but rich experience" and I would agree. Other things that were shared in the closing included how people learned new information and had their own ideas affirmed, how we are so different but also alike, and the belief that we "only get to do death once, so want to do it well." There were 20 people at the March 8th Death Café. As usual after the introduction to the Café we broke into tables of four and part way through the evening switched tables. We decided that next time we need to spread the tables a little farther apart so it’s easier to hear your own group. During the final circle many people noted how easy it was and how relaxed, at home, and comfortable they felt. Someone noted that they were happy to see that people could have such different opinions and yet were very respectful. "There wasn’t any arguing or persuading." A group of 21 people gathered in my home January 11th. After the initial opening information and instructions we broke into 5 groups in various locations. After about 40 minutes of conversations we took a break and then reformed into new groups for a second conversation. We gathered as a large group in the end to say a few words about our experiences. The feedback was very positive. Everyone present wants to come again. Because I had to turn people away I will find a public location that will hold a larger group next time.
This article was well received and many people contacted me about the cafe, which was that night. 21 people attended and I had to turn people away because I didn't have space. I know have a contact list of 50= people who are interested in the next one!
