Many people ask 'What goes on at a Death Cafe?' I think they expect it to be very serious, and perhaps morbid. Far from it. We've found that talking ...

I've just enjoyed another fascinating and absorbing Sunday afternoon, sharing thoughts and experiences around the topic of death and dying. I'm always impressed at the very respectful listening that goes on between strangers drawn to look more closely at a difficult subject. So many topics this time: living wills, the Right to Die debate, dignity and choice, talking with the family, living with the diagnosis of cancer in your early 20s, a widow's experience of losing her husband over 30 years ago. One group member read a very moving account, written by someone choosing to end their life in the early stages of dementia. So ...

Today the entire group consisted of newcomers, gathering for their first experience of a Death Cafe. And what an interesting mixture of thoughts and experiences we shared. Topics discussed were: creative ways to celebrate and remember a loved one, with special focus on keeping memories alive for young children throughout their lives; spiritual beliefs, spiritualism, experiencing the loss of a child, how we explain the complex issue of death to a child, and when to discuss this; why we find death so difficult to talk about, helpful and unhelpful responses in bereavement.
I am deeply grateful for the generous sharing of thoughts and experiences today, and look forward ...

Another glorious Sunday afternoon, and the opportunity to talk about what really matters. Fascinating topics: dealing with the death of a pet, celebrating their life, the importance of ceremonies, reiki healing, life after death, different belief systems, buddhist ceremonies, soul midwifery, letting your family know what you want, different perspectives on life after a serious accident.
The pros and cons of individual banana and raisin muffins as opposed to chocolate brownies. All very important areas, and a great feeling of community.
Thank you all for coming. Looking forward to June 8th's gathering.

Another gloriously sunny Sunday afternoon, and it was good to meet visitors from near and far. It never ceases to surprise me how long people are prepared to travel to an event. I guess it shows how determined they feel about the importance of sharing this conversation, and contributing to a greater knowledge and a feeling of ease. We were very pleased to welcome a Funeral Director and a visitor who plans to run her own Death Cafe. We shared views on embalming, humanist funerals, discussions with family, green funerals, bereavement, personal choices, hopes, fears. What a warm, supportive and remarkablely open meeting. A joy to be part ...

We had another lively and interesting gathering, 10 of us altogether. Our discussion ranged from the philosphical, beliefs about the afterlife: did we meet our loved ones, or is there nothing? Other areas were sudden death, early loss of parents, losing a younger partner and organ donation. Feedback forms showed an interest in discussing dignity in death and making plans for what you want in your own funeral.
Looking forward to March 9th's meeting.

Gill and I were very excited to welcome 20 people to our very first meeting, the ages ranging from 27 to 85. One had even bought her own home-made brownies to add to the wonderful selection.
We were struck by the diversity and richness of experiences shared in the group discussion - from what constitutes a 'good' death, anticipatory grieving, loss of a baby, different attitudes to funerals, whether children should attend, as well as caring for an aging disabled parent whose quality of life is so sadly diminished. There were also life-affirming experiences shared, where perspectives change after sudden trauma and the reminder of one's own fragile ...
