About Christiana Pyrishi:

I am Christiana, but I also go by Tana.

I have always been comfortable with death. Pushing boundaries around what is socially acceptable and what is not around the matter. As a social anthropologist, funerary rites fascinated me, to an almost fetish-level degree. Five years ago, (before even knowing there was such a thing as a death doula) I decided I wanted to plan what would happen to my body in the case of my death. I was very disappointed to learn that in Cyprus, where I live, the options are very limited. So my quest begun when I realised there is so much space for pushing the boundaries even further

What brings you to Death Cafe?

Conversations around death need to finally start happening. We have long lived in cultures that hide away death, thinking of it as a failure and hence something to be ashamed about. But this is not a sustainable way to live.

I have recently finished my training as a Death Doula, and one thing I have already become way too familiar with is that people have the need to talk about death. There is just no space for it. So here comes the Death Cafe.

What would you like your legacy to be?

I want to create the safe space and love that is so needed in this world for healing to ground.

I want for people to have all the information and options they need and to make informed soul-based decisions. Without any pressure or external influences.

I want to change the way people relate to death and hence the way they relate to life.

Thoughts for sharing:

'The work of the mature person is to carry grief in one hand and gratitude in the other and to be stretched large by them.' - Francis Weller

Death is the ultimate shadow work, and until we do this work, we will not live fully.

We are all in this together.
