About Entre la Vida y La Muerte:

I'm Key, a mother, a doctoral student of Naturopathic Medicine, an end-of-life and abortion doula, and, above all, a lifelong student of life and death.

I'm passionate about creating compassionate spaces where we can speak openly about mortality, grief, and the beauty and complexity of being human. Through Death Cafés, grief circles, workshops, and advocacy for suicide awareness and prevention, I hope to help bring conversations that are often silenced or stigmatized into the open.

At the heart of my work is a deep belief in community, autonomy, dignity, and the power of presence. I believe we are not meant to navigate life's most difficult transitions alone, and that sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer another human being is simply to sit beside them, listen, and accompany them without judgment.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

My journey began during my end-of-life doula training, where I became fascinated by how something as universal and inevitable as death could remain so difficult to talk about.

It reminded me of something deeply rooted in my Puerto Rican culture: gathering over coffee and pan sobao at funeral homes or in family homes when someone dies. We share stories about the person who died, laugh, cry, and simply accompany one another. I recognized that same sense of community and connection, with an opportunity to explore mortality beyond the experience of loss.

As I began facilitating Death Cafe's, these conversations, grief circles, and community gatherings, I witnessed how meaningful it can be for people to share their thoughts, fears, and experiences without judgment or the expectation of having all the answers.

What draws me to these spaces is their simplicity: coming together not to fix anything or offer solutions, but to listen, reflect, and be curious.

I believe that when we make room to talk about death, we also make room to explore what it means to truly live.

What would you like your legacy to be?

Love, compassion, justice, and Ayni — a Quechua concept rooted in reciprocity, mutual care, and the understanding that we are connected to one another.

"Today for you, tomorrow for me."

I hope my legacy is not defined by what I accomplished, but by how I made people feel: seen, heard, respected, and less alone.

I want to leave behind spaces where people feel safe to be human, where grief is welcomed, difficult conversations are not silenced, and every person is treated with dignity, compassion, and respect for their autonomy.

Above all, I hope to have contributed to a world where we remember that caring for one another is not only an individual act of kindness, but a collective responsibility. A world where we understand that sometimes we are the ones holding space, and sometimes we are the ones who need to be held.

Thoughts for sharing:

"From the womb we come, and to the womb we return."

"Talking about death won't make it happen."

I believe death is not the opposite of life, but an inseparable part of it. Grief is not something that needs to be fixed or rushed; it is part of the human experience, and often an expression of love.

We don't need to have all the answers, overcome our fears, or agree on what happens after death to begin the conversation. Above all, I believe presence is the most essential thing we can offer one another. Simply being there, listening, and holding space without judgment can be more meaningful than any words or solutions.

To me, talking about death is also an invitation to reflect on how we live, how we love, how we care for one another, and what truly matters during the time we have together.
