About Bob Stoner:

We are starting a Death Café, 12-1pm, on the second Tuesday of each month from September 2022 at Pollokshaws Methodist Church G431LH in conjunction with a hot soup lunch 1130-1:30.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

A link to the spiritual, melding the stark reality of death with a fresh understanding of the spirituality. Now connected with Pushing Up The Daisies, the caring charity looking after those from their last breath to the day of burial or cremation. Working closely with the NHS, Scottish Partnership for Palliative Care, the local crematorium and undertakers, to help us understand what is a good death?

What would you like your legacy to be?

Community flourishing

Thoughts for sharing:

"There are only two days with less than 24 hours in each lifetime, sitting like bookends astride our lives : one is celebrated every year, yet it is the other that makes us see living as precious." Kathryn Mannix

The Swedish term "döstädning" means 'death cleaning'. Before you prepare the swabs and disinfectant, it is more about the graceful art of decluttering the house...before someone else needs to do it. Death Cleaning is proposed for all those 65 years and above. but why not start earlier? This isn't a long weekend but a guided time of going through each room and discerning what should stay and what might need to go to be recycled, given away or even (sadly) discarded. But what criteria might we use to guide us?

How do you do this?We thought today, at Death Cafe, of whether "Will ...

No the bread hadn't gone mouldy. It is wonderful when our conversations can include multiple cultures and how they can change our perspective. So, today from UK and Chinese cultures, we saw the way that humour rarely gets a look in when talking about death - until you get to a Death Cafe. We noticed that it can be a great release to possibly write a letter to the deceased, explaining the differences from the past, and possibly burning it and put that into the grave. We, again, wondered whether it was a good idea to cover the coffin with the lid as although we could see our ...

We started with the story of the Ecuadorean lady who had been pronounced dead in hospital, and was eventually taken by the family to the wake. During the mourning there was knocking heard. They checked the coffin to find that the knocking was coming from within. The coffin was opened to find the lady breathing hard, and alive! We also discussed whether ceremetries shoud be neat or messy: did it matter that the edges hadn't been trimmed?
One question related to the death of a neighbour, one without relatives. If there was no funeral, how might the neighbourhood mourn? As one attendee said: "I used to hate ...

Another great time with conversations from those who attended. We chatted about the recent open day at the Crematorium and whether we'd like to be present even on that final journey of helping our loved one enter the cremator furnace; we discussed what happens to the body when we die; whether we might be willing to look after our loved one at home rather than them going to the funeral undertaker. All this with a hefty bowl of tomato rissoto. What's not to like? humour, discussion and food.

When you attend a meeting there is normally an agenda, something to look to agree upon. Today, everyone brought their own personal agenda, they sought to find understanding, perhaps a bit of peace. We discussed natural burial grounds and whether they offered dignity:

Did this offer sufficient dignity to their loved one if people were walking possibly over them;
but how might that compare when scattering ashes on a golf course?

We compared this with mentions from From Her to Eternity by Caitlin Doughty, wrt Japan

The Death Cafe meets again at G431LH, in the Church, between 12-1pm on Tuesday 14th February.

who would have thought that discussion would mention Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire, the problems of non recyclable oasis from flowers, second hand coffins (!), how the funeral is that portal for our emotions seen when curtains close or the coffin descends, and whether we could view the cremation itself. How grief and the persons sense of humour can become entwined.

Next session Tuesday 10th January. All are welcome
