The cafe was attended by 35 diverse, but connected through our "enthusiasm for talking about death" patrons! Themes shared in round table discussions included: death with dignity, palliative care, caring for the dying who are without mental capacity (such as with Altzehiemer's). Some of the gratitudes expressed were for: community, humor, courage, acceptance of all ideas; willingness to be vulnerable and honest; safety. One comment: "My perspective on death has today, lead to my forging friendships with total strangers!"

This Cafe was attended by 33 participants ages 19 to 84, men and women. We are again joined today by several young students of sociology, sustainable communities, counseling and other schools within the local Northern Arizona University. Patrons thoroughly enjoyed gf ‘blondie’s’, apple slices with caramel dipping sauce and organic cheese and crackers. Round table discussion groups of 8 to 10 each discussed various topics including:
End of life medical interventions ~ why not write it down NOW instead of when you cannot speak?
Doctors don’t always honor a DNR! This is upsetting and the politics around it are confounding.
Grieving is okay, it is good to ...

We are joined today by several young students of psychology from the local Northern Arizona University. What an honor to have them be interested in talking about death! The lemon drizzle cake was also a big hit. . . Here are some comments from our August Death Cafe:
*The depth of kindness in this group is extraordinary
*I enjoy the "attitude of gratitude" I call this my "fear reduction group!"
*I love that I don't have to explain what i mean when I say I have a "Death Cafe buzz!"
*The conversations in our group just flow into one another. . . it brought the 'mystery' back to me.
*We spoke ...

This Cafe was attended by 31 participants ages 21 to 83, men and women. We enjoyed lemon drizzle cake and chocolate chip cookies. Round table groups of 10 each discussed various topics including:
- miscommunications that can happen between the dying and their loved ones
- the ways that grief can become celebrations of life
- embracing the "presence" of loved ones who have passed
- exploring the ways that avoid mortality (fears, belief in afterliffe, needing 'something more')
- how to start a conversation with VERY reluctant family members about our burial wishes

The May 17th Cafe was attended by 29 enthusiastic patrons who enjoyed pineapple upside cake and round table conversations. Here are some snippets that patrons addressed:
*many perspectives on a 'good' or 'bad' death
*welcoming or resisting death and complexities of expressing that to family or friends
* the idea of valuing life above quality of life and how that shapes decision making and choices
*various fears about 'saying goodbye' and how to do that with grace
Some "take away" thoughts:
"When I am dying, take care of yourself so I don't have to."
"When I am present to death, life is so much fuller."
"At the Death ...

The June 28th Cafe was attended by 31 participants aged 20 to 82! They enjoyed gf German chocolate brownies, lemon and blueberry scones with lemon curd and whipped cream along side spirited conversations. This Parlor style gathering was for 8 groups of 3 or 4 people. A large sharing circle at the end of the group included this wonderful observation about Death Cafe:
"Today, as we share, I am reminded of a tree dropping its' leaves in death to then provide enrichment for new life."

This Death Cafe had 20 participants, 7 men and 13 women, spanning the ages of 30 to 85. Reasons for coming included: curious, excited, interested to hear what others say, community, freedom to talk and listen to topics I don't have permission for in the work place. GF Cinnamon Coffee Cake was a big hit. Some comments:
"Coming to the Death Cafe has strengthened me. I feel happier now about livng than I ever have."
"Every person speaking gives me a gift to reflect on."
"Subjectivity Rules!"
"I feel like I'm at a LOVE Cafe! Thank you"

28 people attended from ages 29 to 83. A spirited discussion, round table style, took place by 3 small groups. . . threads of conversation included reflection on many aspects of death (of others and selves). Fabulous cake in the middle and a request for more Death Cafes in Flagstaff to conclude. Evaluations indicated words like: safe, peaceful, exciting, amazing, heartfelt, supportive, eye-opening and joyful.
