About NL Sobotka:

I have a certificate as a End Of Life Doula through UVM. I took the course to achieve my dream of creating a means for those alone and/or estranged from family to transition from their life to their death seamlessly...and with the utmost dignity.

My long term plan is to offer services to those who wish to plan their own services, advance directives, obituaries, celebrations of life, POA, etc. It will be non-profit so that I can create a fund for those without the means to fulfill their end of life plans.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

As I stated above, to "hold space" for those who wish to have an open dialogue about death. Since Death Cafe's have an established following why "reinvent the wheel"? Here in Vermont our saying is "If ain't broke, don't fix it".

What would you like your legacy to be?

The legacy I wish to leave is much different than what I will leave. We all wish to leave a legacy of kindness. To be remembered as loving and a good person. Some will remember me that way, and a free spirited feminist! But there are those who will remember me with ill-will because of something I did. This cannot be helped, you cannot make amends with everyone you wronged. So, the best I can hope for, is that those I love that are left behind will find comfort, solace and peace in the memories they have. And know I am always there with them.

Thoughts for sharing:

"...each life leaves a imprint on this earth. And we don't have to be afraid of that". ~ Maria Housden

This is quote is from a video from my course, the video is called, "Space Between Breaths" and is a documentary of parents who've lost children. It was a powerful documentary and one that inspired me as well.

I am pleased that tonight's Death Cafe in Rutland VT was a success. Everyone spoke and shared. We laughed and also were quiet. Advanced Directives were discussed, as well as various types of burials. I am looking forward to next month!

Practitioners question: Need advice on writing a Post Release

I am organizing my first Death Cafe, I have learned others have attempted and failed. I don't want to fail. So I am reaching out to a seasoned Death Cafe planner to assist and/or provide a composite to edit and send to local newspapers, etc.

I thank you ...

New Blog post: Starting a Death Cafe in Rutland VT

Posted by NL Sobotka on Oct. 28, 2019, 6:29 p.m.

I just completed the UVM certificate End Of Life Doula program and hoping to orgranize a monthly Death Cafe in Rutland, VT, my hometown.

I would love a little direction, maybe a EOL Doula/Death Cafe mentor, to guide me as to organizing a successful Death Cafe...and the pitfalls to avoid.

Please if anyone can offer some guidance/mentorship I'd be most apprecative. Thank you.
