About Sarah Elizabeth Walter:

Though I do not have any professional experience or accomplishments regarding issues involving death or end of life matters, I have had a lifelong respect and fascination for all things related to the subject.

I also know that I am mortal-just like everyone else--and that I will one day die. Is there any better qualification to be involved in a Death Cafe?

What brings you to Death Cafe?

In 2014 I became aware of the Death Positive movement along with Death Awareness activism, and as part of that, grew interested in the idea of the Death Cafe. At that time, I did not see that there were any being held in the Orlando Florida area and so, I thought, "why not me?" I can do this, too!

And I did.

Thoughts for sharing:

“If after I die, people want to write my biography, there is nothing simpler. They only need two dates: the date of my birth and the date of my death. Between one and another, every day is mine.”

Orlando Florida’s third Death Cafe was held on the on Saturday November 7th, a balmy mid-autumn afternoon.  At 15 people in attendance, this was our largest gathering to date - and yet all were very comfortably and cozily arranged in the welcoming living area of our gracious host’s  home. Topics ranged from taking care and preparing your deceased loved ones at home (ala Undertaking LA), to preservation of beloved pets who have passed on, to preparing and preserving our own identities after we’ve died and we no longer have control over such things. In addition to the pieces of themselves that everyone shared, all attendees brought ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Orlando

On a grey, rainy afternoon in late February, eleven strangers sought each other out to discuss the topic of death and all things related Orlando’s second Death Cafe. Despite the weather, our participant’s spirits were not dampened over the course of our two hour event – if anything, a merrier group was never seen in the face of what can often be a difficult, challenging conversation.

Gathered in a loose circle — on sofas, in chairs, on the floor, attendees took part in a group discussion on matters of life and death that ranged from one’s first awareness of death, to last wishes and everything in between ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Orlando

Orlando Florida’s first Death Cafe was held on Saturday May 17th. On a rare, beautiful spring-like day when temperatures are usually soaring, eleven people sought each other out to explore various thoughts surrounding their own mortality and discuss that aeons old Lurker, Death. For some Death was a familiar notion, and were well acquainted with it.  They shared their stories, their wisdom, their insights.  For others, Death was a stranger, a more abstract idea, and around this they expressed their expectations and their fears.  Conversation was lively, punctuated by bursts of laughter and quieter chuckles of mirth - as well as, small silences and pauses for reflection.  Topics ...
