About Cynthia Stadler:
I am a midwife turned hospice nurse. After 20 years of helping people into the world I have transitioned to helping them out. I have been working in care of the dying and education regarding hospice for over 6 years. I am the child of two parents with dementia and have cared intimately for two family members during their dying process. I have two young adult children and am married to a geriatrician.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
In my work I see how discomfort and fear around the discussion of death prevents us from getting what we want at the end of our lives (or maybe even knowing what we want?). i hope to hold a space where we can think about what really matters to each of us, explore thoughts, ideas and fears, and find ways to approach the end of our lives in alignment with how we live them.
What would you like your legacy to be?
That I worked to make a difference in the world.
That I moved through life with an open heart.
That I was kind and honest and loving.
That I didn't take myself too seriously- knew how to laugh and have a good time.

You've heard it said that when all else fails, follow instructions. So we breathe, try to slow down and pay attention, try to love and help God's other children, and-hardest of all, at least for me- learn to love our depressing, hilarious, most decent selves. We get thirsty people water, read to the very young and old, and listen to the sad. We pick up litter and try to leave the world a slightly better place for our stay here.

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe in White River Junction, VT

This month the Death Cafe was held the day after a screening of Amy Jenkin's moving documentary " Instructions on Parting" was screened ant the White River Junction Indy Film Fest. Amy attended our Cafe along with 12 others and we discussed our responses to the film along with a wide variety of death related topics. Great group of 9 participants- all newcomers to the Death Cafe. We had tea and almonds and clementines and cookies and talked about dying green, creating an end of life bibliography, fears around death and a variety of other things. We brainstormed about how to get the word out.
