Belleville Death Café Write-up 8/19/2017

Our session started out with the discussion about Rock Steady. Rock Steady is a boxing program for those who have Parkinson’s disease. Since one of our group has Parkinson’s, it was important information to us.

We then discussed the responsibilities of a funeral home when someone is planning a funeral. This also included the rights of an individual in said planning. This information was state specific so it only entailed those of us in Illinois. Another conversation included the fact that one can have a funeral in their own home. Funerals can be expensive and sometimes, without preplanning and ...

Belleville Death Café Summary 4222017

The summary for this meeting contains a lot of information (either by attachment or websites listed). Our discussions were varied and all pertained to internment or inurnment as well as ways to memorialize our dead loved ones. The information is by no means, legal advice and should only be used for educational purposes. That is fitting considering the purpose behind the Death Café is to educate individuals about death to dispel avoiding or fearing aspects of death. When that happens, one can then proceed with living. Death is as natural and inevitable as birth.

Here are the educational materials promised. I am working ...

3252017 Belleville Death Café Summary

We had another great discussion. One thing that came up with one of the participants was the idea of saying, “He’s dead” did not feel quite natural (and maybe in my opinion uncomfortable anxiety on both ends of that conversation) and the preferred reference was “passed away” or “passed on”.  Where did these euphemisms originate and why? The rational attitude is not fear of death or a desire to put it off for as long as possible, but perhaps to make it more comfortable to talk about it.  What happens when a loved one has died and someone calls or asks about ...

We had a lot of interesting discussion spanning a variety of topics. It was nice to see all of the new participants from last month return as well as one of our original participants. After greeting everyone and more introductions, we started our discussions.

The first topic began when it was asked of the participant that was diagnosed with Parkinson’s had started a dialog with the family about death in respect to what she wanted at the end of life. This became a segway into the importance of advanced directives, and the different forms one should have easy access to. The information everyone in Illinois should look ...

Belleville Death Café welcomed five new participants at our January meeting. With a recent loss of a husband and a son, as well as one new participant diagnosed with Parkinson’s, the new participants were curious about what a Death Café was. They had questions and even though there never is a clear answer on why a husband doesn’t wake up, a son dies before mom and dad, or who will end up with a disease such as Parkinson’s, we were able to discuss the impact of death and dying. It was interesting to hear about the difference in the ability to cope with death.

Belleville Death Café Reflections from 8/27/2016

Wow, what a great discussion! We truly missed everyone who was unable to make it. We had Mr. Chong Lee and his associates from KBS in San Francisco join us and filmed the whole discussion meeting for his documentary his is making. After the discussion meeting, Mr. Lee interviewed about five participants.

The discussion started with something that Sharon had wanted to cover concerning an incident where a friend of hers with a DNR went from the hospital back to a nursing facility and something happened where the nursing facility did not honor the DNR. Unfortunately, the person died anyway ...

It was wonderful to have all the particpants - both old and new. We bascially celebrated our one year anniversary.

Many topics were discussed including green "death suits" and other ways to be buried/cremated and memorialized. Personal experiences were shared and discussed since even though it feels like you are alone in certain terminal situations, it is surprising to find out that others have experienced similar experiences.

The next meeting will take place on May 21st from 6pm - 8pm CST at the Miscellanea House Cafe. Hope to see everyone back and new faces as well.

We were pleased to welcome 8 new participants into the fold. These new members had read a recently published article about the death cafe in the Belleville News-Democrat. We began the meeting with introductions since there were so many new participants. Each were asked to provide their name and their reasons for joining our Death Cafe discussion.

We discussed green burials using mushroom spores which aid in decomp of bodies. This may be an alternative for the overcrowding of the available cemeteries.

The discussion then went to voluntary sharing of the first encounter with death and how the family embraced (or not) it. It was interesting to note ...

Discussion on picking up of the Before I Die wall donated to the Death Cafe by Southwestern Illinois College's Schmidt Art Center. Arrangements were made for the pickup and further discussion included reconstructin of the wall in the Rose Garden as a dedication to Janet, our local aldewoman who died suddenly of a heart attack.

The Belleville News Democrat is interested in doing an article on the Death Cafe and tenative plans for the interview is scheduled for the January 23rd meeting.

The Belleville, IL Death Cafe met on Nov 21st from 6pm and ran quite late until 10pm (normally we are done at 8pm but the meeting lasted longer than normal - expected at this time of the year as the holidays bring painful memories back to those of us who have lost loved ones). We had the privilege of having Gateway of Shadows paranormal investigators join our meeting and we once again discussed the age old question of "is there life after death" and if there is, is our loved ones safe, healthy, and at peace.

Evidence of some of their investigations were shown and for some of us ...

The August 15, 2015 Belleville Death Cafe was inspiring. Attendance was down a bit, but we still had 9 members show up including one of the new members from last meeting. The discussion opened with an update on the Before I Die walls - 2 walls are ready to be constructed. The one at Miscellaena House Cafe that we originally thought would be up by 8/15 had a slight funding snafu but we decided to scale down that wall so it can go up before the wall at Southwestern Illinois College. I believe the construction is waiting on the labor part since the materials have been purchased from ...

Death Café on July 18, 2015

Wow, we had a great turn out welcoming Brandy from Belleville; Christina and Kim from St Louis, MO as new members at our Death Cafe. Sharon exhibited photos of her grandmother and others that were taken many, many years ago. The interesting part of the photos was that they were all dead. Apparently eyes were painted on closed eyelids and they were posed as if they were alive (unfortunately, her grandmother’s right eye was a bit crooked and slightly smeared). Another member brought in cremains that she found in a drawer of an antique (said to be around 100 years old ...

A Southern Illinois Hospice representative and an actual medium attended along with the regular attendees which made for an interesting discussion centered around closure after the death of a loved one and moved to new ways of memorializing their lives.
