What brings you to Death Cafe?
Samhain is the original Irish festival of death and remembrance, when our ancestors gathered as the veil thinned to honour those who had passed and reflect on mortality before winter's darkness. As Samhain Chiarraí revives these ancient customs across Kerry, hosting a Death Café felt like a natural, quieter counterpart to our fire rituals — an open conversation about death and living well, true to the reflective heart of Samhain.
What would you like your legacy to be?
We'd like our legacy to be a Kerry — and an Ireland — where talking about death is as natural and welcome as gathering for a fire on a dark October night, where Samhain is remembered not just as ancestor but as a living tradition of honouring loss and love. If, through events like ours and spaces like the Death Café, more people leave a little less afraid and a little more grateful for the time they have, that's the legacy worth leaving.
Thoughts for sharing:
Samhain teaches us that darkness and death are not endings to be feared, but part of a natural cycle — the third harvest, when the land gives its last, and we in turn give thanks and let go. Our ancestors believed the thinning of the veil at this time of year wasn't something to dread, but an invitation: a chance to sit with those who came before us, to remember, and to be reminded that we are only ever passing through.
