About Alexandra Baer Peralta:

I am a death doula in training and co-host of the Carpinteria Death Café. I’m also a homeschooling mom, a mindfulness practitioner, and someone who values living with no judgment, no expectations, and no attachment. I believe in creating gentle, open spaces where we can talk about death — and in doing so, deepen our love for life.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

Jody Thomas and I started the Carpinteria Death Café to talk openly about a topic many people avoid or fear — even though it’s something we will all face. I believe these conversations can bring comfort, connection, and even a deeper love for life.

What would you like your legacy to be?

I’d like my legacy to be the way I lived: with no judgment, no expectations, and no attachment. I hope that by embodying this, I left behind more compassion, freedom, and presence for my family and community.

The end, I think, will be a little like looking down as far as I can see to where the wind has kicked up the tide and turned it all the same—sea, spume, the air. There might even be someone walking toward me, the way in the edge-of-the-ocean blue light they’ll be obscure until the last moment. I think it’ll be late afternoon, the sky that luminous oyster white into which things disappear. I’ll stop to look at the sky, and the moment I do I realize I’m alone, I misunderstood the figure coming toward me, which, considering the time of day, is as it should be, especially now that the wind has kicked up a little and the white sun has almost dropped under the soft gray almost stillness of the water, it seems just the right hour to be, again, alive.
