About Lisa Jennings:

I was the sensitive one who felt my loved ones’ end of life nearing before others in my family. I asked them about their lives and their successes and took copious notes.  I held their hands, read them stories, assured them of the family's love, and whispered in their ear that it was okay for them to let go.  I have always been a Death Doula. I just wasn’t made aware of it until my heart and soul directed me to this newly emerging work about three years ago.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I am very passionate about changing the landscape of our discussions about deathBy engaging our families early on in conversation about the continuum of life, it de-mystifies death making it more expected and less scaryWhileremaining a painful experience, it is not unexpected, we are as prepared as we can be, and we are then able to move more easily through the steps of processing our grief and loss in a healthy manner.

What would you like your legacy to be?

I am reworking and recreating what I now believe my legacy is to be.  I realize that this has changed with the experiences, maturity and soul's growth across my lifetime. I now believe that it is my purpose to ease the burden of loss by creating bridges between the living and dying, as well as between the dying and the "next place".

Thoughts for sharing:

"Presence is a noun, not a verb; it is a state of being, not doing. States of being are not highly valued in a culture that places a high priority on doing. Yet, true presence or "being with" another person carries with it a silent power - to bear witness to a passage, to help carry an emotional burden, or to begin a healing process. In it, there is an intimate connection with another that is perhaps too seldom felt in a society that strives for ever-faster connectivity. I believe in the power of presence, and it is not only something we give to others. It always changes me - and always for the better." - Debbie Hall, Taken from the book "This I Believe", Edited by Jay Allison and Dan Gediman, 2006 in association with NPR.
