About Heather Lenehan:

I am the facilitator of Death Café Petaluma and the founder of The Grieving Soul. My connection to this work is both personal and professional, shaped by experiences of significant loss and a career serving families within the funeral, cemetery, and end-of-life profession.

I believe that honest conversations about death can help us live with greater intention, compassion, and connection. I create welcoming, judgment-free spaces where people can speak openly about death, dying, grief, and the questions we often carry quietly. I am currently pursuing a Master of Science degree and hope to expand this work through grief coaching and Death Café gatherings for teens.

I live in Petaluma with my family and am deeply committed to making conversations about mortality a natural and meaningful part of community life.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I came to Death Café through both personal loss and my professional work in the funeral and cemetery field. After losing my brother at a young age and, more recently, my mother, I came to understand how deeply grief shapes us—and how rarely we are given comfortable, honest spaces to talk about it. Death Café brings together my belief that speaking openly about death can help us feel less alone, better understand our grief, and live more fully. I facilitate these gatherings to create the kind of welcoming, judgment-free space where people can share their thoughts, questions, fears, and experiences without pressure to find answers or reach a particular conclusion.

What would you like your legacy to be?

That I loved fiercely, laughed deeply, and was always, always honest.

Thoughts for sharing:

I believe that talking about death does not invite it closer, it invites us to live more honestly. When we make space for conversations about mortality, we often discover that we are also talking about love, meaning, regret, connection, and what matters most.

Grief is not something we “get over.” It becomes part of who we are, and with time, we learn how to carry it differently. There is no correct way to grieve, no prescribed timeline, and no need to find the perfect words. Sometimes the greatest gift we can offer one another is simply the willingness to sit together in what is true.
