About Terri Shanks:
My Name is Terri Shanks and I am an Indepdent Celebrant and Celebrant Trainer in the South of England. Our death cafe's in Worthing, West Sussex are being run by myself and Christine Walker-Kelley & Ian Rudkin, managers from Worthing Crematorium.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
As a celebrant I am aware that no matter how 'good' a funeral ceremony may be, it does not wave a magic wand and heal people's grief. It is an important part of the healing process but only a very small part. I want to be able to help and support bereaved people in my community on a longer and on-going basis and I believe that holding regular death cafe's with provide additional help & healing for people.
I was discussing this recently with staff at Worthing Crematorium after conducting a remembrance & blessing ceremony for their open day and they said that they had also been looking to facilitate a local bereavement liason group. After a meeting between Ian, Christine and myself we felt that holding Death Cafe's as a joint project would be of real benefit to our community.
What would you like your legacy to be?
To assist the healing of those in need, to hold a hand, to listen, to care and to train others to understand the importance of doing the same. The smallest actions can make the greatest difference.
Thoughts for sharing:
Grief cannot be healed in a moment, a month, or even a lifetime, but it can be lessened when people are there for us, to listen to our grief, share our pain and wipe away our tears.
