About Abi:

Hello! I'm Abi, 29, based in the East Midlands.

I'm interested in our attitudes and practices towards aging, dying and death as a nation.

Formerly a Natural Burial Ground worker - I have worked as a gravedigger, funeral arranger and undertaker. I am currently a willow coffin maker, passionate about the greening of funeral practices.

I started attending Death Cafes when I started looking at death as a topic in my Philosophy, Religion and Ethics undergraduate degree.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

Since 2015, Death Cafes have been an incredible and informative part of my relationship with death. I endeavour to continue my journey of developing and strengthening my relationships to death and grief - where I have found Death Cafes to be a gentle and poigant guide in this.

Thoughts for sharing:

My work as a young gravedigger allowed me a closeness to death, for which I am thankful to have spent the time to think about what I was doing and why. I enjoy talking and being asked about gravedigging and funerals, as these experiences powerfully informed and equipped me for later experiences in my life. I am very grateful to settings like Death Cafes and spaces willing to have the conversations about stigmatized topics.

To those that did brave the chilly evening to attend the first Death Cafe at Curious Yellow Kafe, I am proud and humbled by this evening of conversation.

We had 13 attendees, all experiencing their first ever Death Cafe event. Conversations included stories and experiences with funeral directors, funerals and deaths during COVID restrictions, old and new grief and how others respond to our grief, caring for the dying and how to live with death in our everyday life.

Thanks to all that shared, were vulnerable, respectful, kind and brave. From the responses, I am pleased that attendees got a lot from the evening. I intend to host ...
