About Perth Death Cafe :
I have been fascinated about death and dying from a young age. Always curious to know what happens when and how we die; that really matters to me. My parents and their family members all died relatively young so death is not an uncommon experience for me. I came very close to death at 17 as the result of a car accident and at the same time my dad was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with cancer. He died a year later on the same day as my accident. We spent our last Christmas together in hospital. That was a defining period in my life. As a family we didn't do death very well. As a community we don't do death very well. My views on death and dying have changed considerably over time. I am a strong proponent of natural death and burial.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
My desire is to encourage compassionate communities where we take good care of the sick and dying with consideration to their repsective values and needs. That means being educated about end of life matters, sharing and communicating relevant information to ensure good care, and taking action accordingly. Open and honest conversations are at the heart of this change process.
What would you like your legacy to be?
A footprint that has done minimal harm; rather touched people's lives and the environment with kindness, respect and support as approriate.
Thoughts for sharing:
We all deserve a good beginning and a good ending in life no matter how we live our life in between.

Nine of us gathered around a table in the light and warmth of the Bodhi Tree Café and Bookshop in Mt Hawthorn, ready to experience our very first session for the Perth Death Café.
Most of us had experienced the death of friends and family members. We were grateful for the opportunity to share our stories of loss and to listen intently to the stories of others present. While we talked, shared, listened to and supported each other, we gained a deeper understanding of the power of such stories and the very real sense that we are not alone in what can seem, in the darkest moments, to ...
