About Gemma Norburn:

My name is Gemma and I work in a mortuary in a hospital. I would like to move forward with talking about death and reducing the taboo around the subject.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I would like to meet other people who have interests in talking about death and hopefully by hosting these events I can make some friends and have some interesting conversations!

What would you like your legacy to be?

To have progressed the Death Positive movement and made death an easier process and concept for a lot of people.

November’s Death cafe was attended by 11 people who all chatted on a number of different topics which ranged from the serious to the numerous. The two hours absolutely flew by and it was 9pm before I knew it! It was a good demonstration of why I host these events, I think it’s very important for different people to meet each other and discuss these topics together.

The summer Death Cafe had a slightly less busier turnout than others due to regular attendees being on holiday or unwell. However we still had a great turnout of 9 people, and I was very pleased with the conversation that flowed naturally. Whereas previous events have been very cheery and funny in places, this event was more serious but still light hearted. We largely discussed supporting people through their own death, or bereavement and also long term illnesses alongside euthanasia. This came from the experiences of the group in knowing people who had been through such things. I was pleased that we had mostly newcomers with some returning ...

The event could not have gone better if we’d tried! Time flew by and we had a big turnout of 14 people but the staff at the Cakery got involved too taking us up to 16. The discussion flowed well, and even when groups broke off to discuss their own topics it came back to the whole group at some point. We mainly ended up talking about funerals and planning, with a bit about song choices. There was also some talk around the concept of a ‘good death’. Very pleased with the outcome and looking forward to the next one!

What a fabulous evening, I could not have asked for it to go better. Twelve people in total came along to the Sweet Rose Cakery for two hours of death discussions over tea, coffee, milkshakes, wine and cake. There was a lot of cake! Firstly, I would like to say a huge thank you to the staff and especially Caroline at the Sweet Rose Cakery for letting us host our Death Cafe at their venue when they really had no idea what it was they were letting themselves in for! You’ve been so accommodating and I really can’t thank you enough. Secondly, a thank you to ...

Death Cafe write up: Hornchurch High Street Death Cafe

Posted by Gemma Norburn on May 19, 2018, 4:46 a.m.

The first Death Cafe in Hornchurch was a great success! I had booked a table for 8 expecting no more than that, but 16 people came along to share their thoughts and ideas with us. We began by introducing ourselves and starting the conversation off. We covered natural burial woodland, will making, online personas after death and talking to children about death and bearevement. I am so pleased that it was smooth, everyone was friendly and I’ve had some great feedback. We covered some serious topics but the conversation remained cheery and friendly between those who attended.

This has definitely encouraged me to want to make this ...
