One thing I have really loved about hosting a Death Cafe during a pandemic is that we have had guests from all over the world, and they share some brilliant stories and perspectives with us. I think there is something really to be learnt from opening up Death Cafe to the online format. It has meant so many people are able to come together that couldn't before, and I certainly would never have considered an online format to have so many advantages!

We had a lovely gathering of new and familiar faces alike. It was refreshing to not largely discuss COVID but cover some new topics too including end of life care and facing your own mortality. We continue to see new faces from all around the world and we encourage anyone from any time zone to take part if they would like and are able to.

The event was a calm one with a lot of sharing about personal experiences of elderly relatives being in hospitals, care homes or dying. It was a pleasure to host because it felt like people gained some real insight into others experiences and how that impacted them. Not everyone shared and it was nice to have a largish group with some people just listening in. We covered others topics such as animal death and COVIDs impact on our thoughts and culture around death.

It was a wonderful evening of cheery death chats with ten regular attendees. It would be great for some new people to attend in future so I would hate to discourage anyone from coming along but it was a really nice evening. We covered topics such as communication and it's importance around death, and whether loved ones can appear to return to people in their final days.

The storm, terrible traffic and the time of year didn't stop people coming which is wonderful. Some very poignant topics at this event, and some very insightful discussions. Particularly found interesting the discussion around how selfish you can be if you know you are dying. I'm very pleased to have hosted this event.

A small group once again, but I enjoy the smaller groups as much as the larger ones because it can feel like a much closer discussion. Topics covered were quite clinical relating closely to palliative care and how end of life care works. I found it very interesting and learnt a lot, I hope others did too!

The August 2019 Upminster Death Cafe was a surprise success as I feared due to the summer holidays people might have been away or not come. I was pleasantly surprised by the fab turnout and that we had a few new attendees too. A great range of topics discussed but a particular highlight was the topic raised by one attendee of the idea of a ‘death day’ each year. Very interesting!

What a great event we had! I had hoped for a great turnout and there really was. We discussed a huge range of topics but i felt it largely focused on the purpose and ideaology behind death cafe and the death positivity movement which I think really helped me feel these events are worthwhile.
For anyone who struggles to locate the event, I will be better with signposting in the future.

This was the first of these events to be held regularly at this location, so it was no suprise that attendance was quite low but I cannot see why this could not increase over time. We talked a great deal about the concept of Death Cafe and why it was such a great idea which I expected for our first event. I hope that this will continue to run at the hospital for as long as people would like to attend (no matter how few!).

November’s Death cafe was attended by 11 people who all chatted on a number of different topics which ranged from the serious to the humerous. The two hours absolutely flew by and it was 9pm before I knew it! It was a good demonstration of why I host these events, I think it’s very important for different people to meet each other and discuss these topics together.

The summer Death Cafe had a slightly less busier turnout than others due to regular attendees being on holiday or unwell. However we still had a great turnout of 9 people, and I was very pleased with the conversation that flowed naturally. Whereas previous events have been very cheery and funny in places, this event was more serious but still light hearted. We largely discussed supporting people through their own death, or bereavement and also long term illnesses alongside euthanasia. This came from the experiences of the group in knowing people who had been through such things. I was pleased that we had mostly newcomers with some returning ...

The event could not have gone better if we’d tried! Time flew by and we had a big turnout of 14 people but the staff at the Cakery got involved too taking us up to 16. The discussion flowed well, and even when groups broke off to discuss their own topics it came back to the whole group at some point. We mainly ended up talking about funerals and planning, with a bit about song choices. There was also some talk around the concept of a ‘good death’. Very pleased with the outcome and looking forward to the next one!
