About Johanna Gordon:

Hello!

I am a funeral director (mature student) currently in my final year.

I have a sincere interest in death and dying studies and the grief process.  I believe my own experiences and interest in this subject would be beneficial to our client base.  I wish to learn more about Death Cafe and the potential to incorporate it as a component of our aftercare program that I'm researching/developing.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I am conducting a research project, the focus of my study for this project is in the field of bereavement aftercare and peer support models/initiatives in the funeral home setting.

I'm interested in holding a Death Cafe at our funeral home - perhaps on a regular basis.

Death Cafe could be very beneficial to the families we serve who need/want to "talk about death" - either pre or post loss - or as an interest in the subject.

What would you like your legacy to be?

I pursued a long time desire to enter the funeral industry because I have a geniuine interest in helping people through a difficult period in their life.

If I was to leave a legacy it would be that I was a supportive and caring human being that made a difference in their grief journey and a positive impact in their renewal.

Thoughts for sharing:

As we are becoming a more secular society - a concern would be that we continue to deny death even further by holding "NO SERVICE", and that no rituals of death are being carried out by those who are bereaved.  The intent is not to have families reconsider holding a service - but that they start to TALK ABOUT DEATH - in a community of caring.  Death Cafe could be an important step toward normalizing death, a ritual experience, or connecting with others in a common bond.
