Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Zarautz (10)

Posted by Iñaki Peña Bandrés on May 4, 2019, 3:45 a.m.

On the second of May, eleven men gathered together in our compassionate community to talk about death and dying, frailty, grief and caregiving, instead of talking about football. It was inspired by the work of ‘Toka gizon taldea’, aiming to search for new ways of masculinity. It was special too because it was held just in Basque language.

We talked about the difficulty to show compassion, and when to get close to a person in grief. And we identified a main tool for it, intuition (that feminine value). We mentioned masculine emotional castration and the lacks of masculine traditional roles.

We talked about the topical and traditional way ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Zarautz 7th edition

Posted by Iñaki Peña Bandrés on Dec. 17, 2018, 1:06 p.m.

Our date was at the usual place and time. In this seventh edition, a group of people (13) from  Zarautz and other surrounding villages got together around some coffee and tea cups and a cake. This time, male presence was more numerous (6) than usually. Is something changing?

After introducing ourselves and sharing expectations, the first person who began speaking made this sentence: “I laugh of death, I’m not afraid of her”. Another one says to be angry with death, because of having brought her mother when she was a child. There are people who recognize their fear in front of death, each of them from a ...

Last june 12th Jabi Bereziartua and I hosted the 6th edition of DC in our town, at the Basque coastline.

The previous one was the first one taking place inside our newly created compassionate community, "Zarautz, Herri Zaintzailea".

Besides, in these days we have hold the international congress on Palliative Care in the city of Vitoria-Gasteiz, about 90 km from Zarautz. Precisely, this has been the context for the creation of our compassionate initiative.

Regarding to the 6th edition of DC, 14 people attended it, 9 women and 5 men. 7 people over 60 yeras-old, and 7 below that.

Quite a younger group, taking into account that, for ...

Date: June 7th, 2017.

Place: Hotel Alameda. Zarautz (Basque Coutry).

Hosts: Amaia Artze and Iñaki Peña.

In this second edition at our town, 18 people attended the event. Most of them were women (14:4).

Almost half of the attendants were over 65 years-old. But there was a couple from Zumaia, a mother with her son, 20 years-old. It was really interesting listening to him, his thoughts, his experience.

Most of the people who came over would like to repeat some time. Next one, probably in september.
