About Death Cafe Boston with Suzanne B. O'Brien RN:

I have had the honor of being a hospice nurse and an oncology nurse for most of my career. I have studied the difference between the elements that make a positive passing and ones that are not as positive. 90% of a positive passing is the ability to talk about death as a natural part of our lifes journey. The Death cafes provide a safe, nonjudgemental environment for us to do just that. They are wonderful gatherings that enrich us all.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

The time is now for us to talk about death and have us emphasize how precious time is and take a good look at how we want to spend it.( It's our most valuable commodity)

What would you like your legacy to be?

I have started The End of Life Doula training Program to help teach people how to care for patients and families at this precious time. My hope is that every county will have a volunteer doula network throughout the country. Community taking care of community. It is inevitable that all of us will be touched by End of life. With the right kindness, compassion and support death can be the natural experience it was meant to be. We need to do this together. Thoughts for sharing:

A Gallup pole by The National Hospice Organization in 1996 found that 9/10 people want to be kept at home if they were terminally ill, yet half were dying in the hospital.

82% of people say its important to put their wishes in writing, yet 23% have actually done it. California Healthcare foundation (2012)

We need to talk about it and know that dying is a natural process.
