Having worked in the field of bereavement counseling for over a decade I thought I had pretty much understood the importance of involving children in the grieving process. Then one day a several years back, I found my family faced with the death of a much admired, much loved uncle. Uncle Oscar died after a brief illness in May of 2001. Because our family had been very close to Uncle Oscar it was clear that ...

The first Death Café in Kingston was organised in support of the 5th annual Dying Matters Awareness Week and took place on Tuesday, 13th May at the Rose Theatre (sponsored by the Kingston University Alumni Opportunity Fund). Ten people joined the group discussion on matters of life and death prompted by a set of open-ended questions. Participants included a mix of males and females across the age spectrum who contributed to a thought-provoking, intimate and exhilarating discussion about (a) death and its meanings (what is death? how are we to understand it? in what ways does our sociocultural background and experiences shape our perception of death ...

Nine of us gathered around a table in the light and warmth of the Bodhi Tree Café and Bookshop in Mt Hawthorn, ready to experience our very first session for the Perth Death Café.
Most of us had experienced the death of friends and family members. We were grateful for the opportunity to share our stories of loss and to listen intently to the stories of others present. While we talked, shared, listened to and supported each other, we gained a deeper understanding of the power of such stories and the very real sense that we are not alone in what can seem, in the darkest moments, to ...

She was so excited when she shared the news with me that she was pregnant. A couple of hours later, I had a vision of her carrying a baby in her arms, swaddled in a blue blanket, a blue tuque on his head. It would be a boy! Motherhood was a journey she could hardly wait to embark upon. Becoming a grandmother was something I had been eagerly awaiting. as it would mark yet another ...

What a wonderful afternoon we had with our Death Cafe held at Hopewell Hospice on the Gold Coast to commemorate Palliative Care Week. It was our largest group with 35 people. To give you an idea of some of the topics, here is a shortened list of what we spoke about - researching purchasing a funeral, what if someone doesn't want a funeral, what happens when someone dies at home, self care for carers, why we say the words "passed away" instead of died, what to say to a person who doesn't want to talk about their pending death, pre-paid funerals, after death experiences, grief, ashes ...

We " Last Breath " hosted our 3rd Dath Cafe event in Cobourg with a crowd of 35 people plus our group of 5. A packed house. Interesting the 3 words that seem to be repeated as words to describe the participants esperience in all three locations where we've hled these events is Enlightening, Interesting and Informative. As a facilitator I took more time in explaining that this event was for the participants sharing not the giving of information. There is desire for this as well. We are on to our 4th event in June to a location we have been before. Our next 3 events are repeats of ...
