Qualitative research on the Death Cafe experience: looking for participants!

Attention all Death Cafe participants!

Possibly for the first time since its humble beginnings in September, 2011, research on your experiences of participating in the Death Cafe movement has finally arrived!

For those of you haven’t heard of me, I am a Counsellor and Behavioural Scientist living in Western Australia and currently studying a Masters of Counselling at Murdoch University. I have been running the Death Cafe – Fremantle group monthly since March 2013.

I am looking to interview 6-10 people who have participated in at least 3 Death Cafes (but not from my Death Cafe) on the experiences you have had. I will be interviewing you for ...

first cafe

Was introduced to this first at an IONS conference years ago but until recently hadn't thought more about it. Being active at a 60+ Activity Center, the director asked if any had heard of it and if they would be willing to host one there.  I am asking the same as another host asked (and I saw no reply); what are some suggestions, questions, etc. is getting the group conversation started

Thank you....such an important and seldom discussed topic

National Grieving Day - Death Cafe 29th November

Hello everyone, Tuesday 29th November is the darkest part of the year (with the new moon) before the return of the light with the Solstice. National Grieving day would like to invite you to participate in hosting a conversation around death, dying and grief on this day, wherever you are in the world. If you are drawn to participating, we can share your information to encourage as many conversations as possible. See information on poster. Looking forward to hearing from you, Best wishes, Treacy O'Connor, National Grieving Day

Your help needed with BBC World Service documentary on Death Cafes

Hi,

Please see the message below.

Thanks,

Jon

BBC World Service are creating a radio documentary all about Death Cafes and are looking for Death Cafes around the world to record in. This would mean allowing one or two people to attend the cafe to discreetly record some of the open discussions and speak to people individually.

They are looking to record between now and 13th January at the very latest and would be very interested in hearing from anyone who already has a Death Cafe arranged, or may like to work with them to set one up.

This is a great opportunity to showcase what Death Cafes ...

Evaluation forms?

Posted by mburnside on Nov. 1, 2016, 1:13 p.m. 4 comments

Greetings, I am co-facilitating a Death Cafe in Lexington MA this week.  The facilitator's guide mentions an evaluation form though I've not discovered the link (or the form).  I am happy to create a form for our use, though would like to use a standard DC eval form if one is availabke.

Many thanks if you can direct me to it!

Hey all,

I am looking into hosting my first Death Cafe here in Florida.

I have a dear friend who hosts in Philidelphia, and amabout to start picking brain (pun intended) on how she started up.

What are the first few topics, ice breakers or questions you tend to ask in the first few meet ups to get the conversation flowing?

Thanks and I'm  really looking forward to hearing some feed back!

Hosting in my wellness center?

Posted by KristenHatch on Oct. 10, 2016, 10:16 a.m. 2 comments

Hello, I'm a hypnotherapist that practices out of an alternative medicine clinic in Northampton, MA, and am interested facilitating a group in that area. I am wondering if it would  inappropriate to host it at the clinic, as it could seem like a promotion of our services, although I absolutely wouldn't promote it in discussions, and would redirect any questions about our services to more appropriate topics. It would be easier to host it there logistically (don't have to research, contact and arrange with other venues), but I want to respect the integrity of the tradition. What are your thoughts? Thank you for your time!

Hello,

I'm a filmmaker working on a documentary film around death at the University of Westminster, my name is Tom Whitehead. Our film will be discovering the various phisilophical perspectives on death in contemporary culture and the ways in which it is dealt with. We want to open up a diolouge, we would be greatly intrested in connecting with anybody involved with Death Cafe about taking part in our film. We want to explore Death Cafe, it's function, it's meaning, the people involved. Please contact me at: w1484651@my.westminster.ac.uk if you're intrested, Thank you.

Hello, I am often asked if someone can bring their child. While I prefer not, I find it difficult to answer this question at times.  I am curious about the thoughts of others.   Thank you

I am finding it impossible to post a new meeting for our Death Café. When I go to "Post your Death Café, all I can get is a page to post a new D.C. We have been holding these meetings off and on for almost two years, so we are not new.

I need some help in posting notice of our next meeting, on September 8th,  2016.

Thanks in advance. My email is: boldrider@hotmail.com

Finding the CURRENT Death Cafe usig the map

Posted by Alliance on Aug. 17, 2016, 4:45 p.m. 1 comment

We hold Death Cafe regularly in our commuinity, and always post an announcement of the upcoming one... If a search is made for either of our 2 local zipcodes, the details which are shown are those of a Death Cafe held in April 2015, and not the one that is CURRENT.

Is there a way to remove the archived offerings, or at least disconnect them from the search map?

Issue with sending emails to Microsoft addresses

Posted by Jon Underwood on Aug. 10, 2016, 2:19 a.m.

Hi,

Just to let you know, the Death Café website is currently having a problem with sending mail to Microsoft email addresses, e.g. hotmail.com addresses or outlook.com or live.com (or a couple of others).

All mail to these addresses is currently not getting through to the intended recipient and generating an error message.

I am forwarding all these mails on by hand but this may take some time.

Photography at the cafe

Posted by SHK on Aug. 8, 2016, 12:11 p.m.

A local magazine would like to do an aritlce about the Death Cafe and asked if they can come and take pictures at the event.  My gut says it's fine becasue it's another way to get the word out (as long as I annouce at the beginning that that will take place) but wanted others thoughts.
