Hospice Pioneer - Barbara Karnes RN

Long ago there was a Death Cafe blog post that mentioned how Barbara Karnes RN's book GONE FROM MY SIGHT helped a group of people.  She's amazing.  Here's an interview that just came out with her talking about how dying isn't a medical event.  It's sooooo good.  Enjoy!

Home birth - home death - home funeral

Posted by Josefine Speyer on June 24, 2015, 1:28 a.m.

When we set up The Natural Death Centre Charity in 1991 Nicholas Albery and I were inspired by Sheila Kitzinger and the Natural Birth Movement. Like her we think birth and death are similar events and require a similar attitude. I am so glad Sheila had a home death and a home funeral by all accounts with a natural burial. Made possible in part through the work of the Natural Death Centre.

Here's an article from The Atlantic that mentnions Death Cafe, and a new area of research into the effect of thinking about death which is called "Terror Management Theory."  Lots of interesting research about why people do what they do, and how thinking of death changes their choices.

"Greenberg thinks that in this odd way we try to fend off death. He figures that people who are not in your group in some very primal way make you feel invisible."

Interesting! Curious about your thoughts and impressions.

Pain & Suffering at End of Life

Posted by Kathy Miller, LCPC on Feb. 3, 2015, 10:37 a.m.

Article looks at why pain and suffering have increased at end of life, despite more use of hospice and palliative care.

"We don't have the vernacular in our society to have the conversation about the end of life," Ihrig said. "People say, 'I don't want to take away someone's hope.' But in a metastatic pancreatic cancer, for example, we have to redefine what we mean by hope," he said, citing one of the most deadly cancers.
