About this Death Cafe

We had our first Death Café of 2024 this week in Rangiora – it was a great kōrero, yummy fruit cake and 7 lively attendees plus Anna and me.

I was delighted and grateful to meet four NODA volunteers (have a look at https://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/wellbeing/300926973/no-one-dies-alone-the-volunteers-who-sit-with-strangers-for-their-final-moments.)

The room was full of knowledge, experience and ideas; some questions and lots of perspectives. We asked, “what do I do if my partner dies?” – the difference approach if a death is sudden or expected or unexpected. We explored how to access information to make plans and decisions for our own health care and demise, how to communicate these ideas with our family members and how to manage if they struggle to hear or accept our ideas.

Looking forward to seeing you in Amberley on 17th March 2pm,

Stay well and keep talking, Liz :)

About Liz Adcock-White

Kia ora, I’m Liz and for as long as I can remember I have been interested in people and their life stories. My upbringing in the UK, Europe and Kuwait introduced me to cultural difference, disability, death and dying - and the importance of knowing ourselves as our own story unfolds. I am a registered Social Worker, my work includes disability assessment, working with babies and children with HIV/AIDS in Romania, a decade of EPOA work and supporting the mental health and palliative care needs of an elderly friend, holistic grief support and voluntary palliative biography writing. Most recently I founded The Fifth Season: Palliative Support (thefifthseason.co.nz) which offers companionship and guidance through the vast emotions, decisions and tasks that may arise towards the end of life.
