About this Death Cafe

Phoenix Death Café for Healthcare Workers & Volunteers

Legend relates The Phoenix as a spirit guide that is a powerful symbol of rebirth, regeneration, and new beginnings. The spirit bird lives for 500 years, then sets itself afire, with death allowing its’ spirit to rise and evolve into renewed life.

We all know that as human beings, every single one of us will one day die. As healthcare workers and volunteers, some of us experience death on a frequent basis and that often is from a medical perspective. However, in our hearts, many of us feel that it is also a spiritual experience.

The intent of the Phoenix Death Café, which is sponsored by the Phoenix chapter of the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association (HPNA), is to allow us as healthcare workers and volunteers, a safe space to share and learn from each other about both the medical and spiritual aspects of end of life. We give ourselves permission to share our thoughts, feelings, and insights with each other in dealing with our unique and profound experiences related to death, dying, and loss.

Participants may simply observe or participate fully in the conversation, depending on personal preference. Feel free to enjoy tea, coffee, cake, or nourishment during the meeting.

We look forward to meeting with ‘old friends’ and ‘new friends alike’.

Meetings are free and held the remainder of 2023 on the first Thursday, every other month, 6-7PM, MST. Our remaining meetings for 2023 will be held on:

Thursday, September 7, 2023—Virtual ZOOM Meeting

Thursday, November 2, 2023—Virtual ZOOM

All facilitators are members of the Phoenix Chapter of The Hospice & Palliative Nurses Association. All have had prior experience as Death Cafe Facilitators. Two facilitators are present. In the event the group is greater than 10 individuals, we break out into two groups, then come back together as one large group to allow for group sharing and closing comments.
