There were new faces at the cafe tonight, especially since we had to suddenly move our location! This time we discussed lost ones passed and advanced planning, taking the opportunity to complete Advanced Directive and both medical and financial power of attorney forms. Skully was delighted to assist and help make their passing more structured when they need it most!

Death Cafe write up: Portland, OR Thursday Evening Death Cafe

Posted by nomenoyou1 on Dec. 15, 2025, 10:11 a.m.

We enjoyed a cornucopia of cake and cookies along with tea before our meeting last night. Scott facilitated and David and Ellen leant their insights. The group was very knowledgeable and engaged in our discussion of death and dying. With such a deep understanding in the attendees, we were able to explore each topic in detail. Each person shared their personal experiences with death and how they felt during and after the dying process. We had a person who is learning the academic side of death. Other people came from backgrounds in chaplaincy and mental health. They shared years of growth and development as they experienced death and ...

Death Cafe write up: Portland, OR Thursday Evening Death Cafe

Nine people attended this monthly Thursday evening Cafe at the Peace House in Northeast Portland. For several people this was their first Death Cafe. We discussed many tender topics including fear of death and love of life, living with a terminal diagnosis, living with grief and loss. Grief for an imperfect family member who caused us pain is especially challenging. The importance of gratitude as a daily life guide was discussed. Several people expressed gratitude for having an open space to discuss their concerns, hopes and fears. Chocolate cake, vanilla cake and gluten free cookies with tea were enjoyed, and the leftovers left for the Peace House community.

We had 25 people show up at this café. Thusly we split into two groups for sharing. People were very thirsty for the chance to share. It was nice that CBC Winnipeg gave us an interview beforehand to promote.
