December Death Cafe Iowa

A write up of Death Cafe Iowa

By DeathCafeIowa

For December’s Death Café Iowa we met at Palmers Deli & Market on Ingersoll. Buffy Peters and Becca Suvalsky (members of the Bereavement Professionals Group) facilitated the group. We had four people in attendance, 3 women and 1 man, and participants ranged in ages and professions. Members brought several interesting topics to the group this month. We had a really good conversation at this month’s Death Café.

One group member brought an article that discussed the history of death certificates. This lead to a really interesting conversation about birth and death certificates. We also discussed the importance of having a death certificate and what it is used for. Another group member talked about an article they read about how to write your own obituary. Members discussed what they would want on their own obituary and what we would like it to not say. This lead to another conversation about the importance of having all of your information in one place. One member shared that they are going to utilize a google doc and share it with their next of kin. Another member shared that maybe they would create a spreadsheet.

Each member contributed personal examples and experiences throughout the death cafe. We look forward to more conversation next month and in the coming year!
