About Leanne Skipsey:
My passion is in contributing to a cultural shift where people feel more at ease considering and speaking about dying and death. I currently manage an awareness raising project; ‘The Last Taboo project – talking about dying and death’ for Fernlea House, funded by the Eastern Metropolitan Region Palliative Care Consortium. The project offers Death Cafes across the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, presentations for community groups, self directed toolkit – being preparing for end of life.
Feel free to contact me to make a booking for upcoming Death Cafes in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs or to book a presentation for a community group.
I recently managed a mentoring program to build capacity of family caregivers to care for loved one. A value for me is working towards bringing acceptance to whatever life presents. I draw on over 20 years of personal yoga and meditation practice.
Consultancy, Project Management and Training:
- Difficult conversations around dying and death for staff working with families.
- Hosting and facilitating Death Cafes
- Conversations and planning to enable care choices at end of life
- Presentations for community groups - ‘Coming ready or not’ – preparation for end of life
- Mindfulness Meditation
- Self Compassion training
What brings you to Death Cafe?
I have a vision for communities to reclaim the capacity for greater connection and care for one another at end of life. In my experience being heard and hearing others speak openly brings more normality to dying and death; which makes it a little easier to plan ahead, when supporting loved ones and others in our communities when our own time comes.
Thoughts for sharing:
Experiencing a number of sudden unexpected deaths of friends and loved ones, and surviving a near fatal car accident in my late twenties inspired a whole new perspective on life and death. I realise dying to be the final stage of life and a precious transition offering the opportunity for a deeper knowing of ourselves, those close to us and the mystery we call life.
