About Liz Thompson:

Becoming a Civil Celebrant has been a natural progression for me from working in my chosen profession of Social Care and Social Inclusion. For most of my working life I have worked in diverse communities, with many different people, those who have been excluded from mainstream society and living in areas of social deprivation, I have worked for charities, in the voluntary and public sector as a senior manager specialising in change management and team development.

Very early on in my career I began to really immerse myself in Equality & Diversity and Person Centred Practise. I also became interested in how people with learning disabilities process and understand grief and loss. I trained in Bereavement Counseling though I am not a practising counselor, and worked closely with Salford's Adult Services psychology team to produce a training programme to educate and enable staff to support people with learning disabilities through bereavement.

My passion for working with people is central to my work, I do not discriminate and I believe in an holistic approach which includes people and empowers them to be in control, it's their life, their ceremony, and as such their input is vital to making it really meaningful and personal. Every ceremony that I write is unique, personally written, honouring and respecting people's wishes and views.  Manchester Celebrant

What brings you to Death Cafe?

I heard about Death Cafe's from a friend and have begun to investigate. I like the idea of a resource that raises awareness and supports people to discuss somethng that is after all part of life and should not be taboo

What would you like your legacy to be?

I would like to think that people that I have supported over the years are empowered to lead the life that they choose. Making their own choices and passing their own wisdom to others.

one of my favourite quotes is

"Your influence is a message to a time you will never see"

Thoughts for sharing:

I would like all people to be comfortable with the concept of death and dying and to see it as a natural ending to a life well lived.

Through my work I hope to be able to offer a service that meets the needs of all people, whoever they are and that they are supported to die with dignity their way with the people that are important to them, followed by a ceremony that fits who they are as a person, that reflects their values and beliefs.

The sanitisation of death in today's society. Family pressures, the law on ending life. Services available in other countries that are not avialable in  the UK.

It was a lovely meeting and we as a group are getting to know each other. We agreed that we wopuld hold the meetings quarterly and I will post the dates on the site. we hope to see you at the next meeting, bye for now, Liz Thompson.
