Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe Warkworth

There were six of us today at our second Death Cafe in Warkworth. It was enlightening and informative. Everyone had space and privacy to share their stories, ask questions and respond with answers. Links, resources, and experiences were shared. Discussion included end of life care, options for families making arrangements for death care, options around the care of deceased loved ones, including burial and cremation, the necessity for medical and legal information required, and the importance of taking ownership of your own end of life and death care. Thank you to everyone who attended and shared of themselves.

Six people attended this Death Cafe, all of them newbies to the experience. Most were either working in a related industry or had training in a related area and therefore felt very comfortable in the space. Lots of topics discussed and experiences shared in our kōrero, especially about advance care planning, natural burial, responses to expected deaths and sudden deaths, embalming versus other cooling methods, the confusion around legal paperwork and how to claim sovereignty of your own death care and bring it back into the domain of the community.
The conversation flows organically, the knowledge we share is phenomenal.
Thank you to Sheepworld Cafe for being amazing ...

This Death Cafe was held it at a local retirement centre, Summerset Village, the first time we have done this and so we were not sure what the response would be. The manager of the facility was dead keen (pun intended) and supported the event by placing posters around the walls and advertising in their newsletter. We adhered to the Death Cafe rule of no agenda, but did have one of the facillitators with social work background in case the discussion involved issues around getting affairs in order which proved to be a great move.

Invitations went out to the wider community but attracted mostly people living in ...

Practitioners question: Death Cafe in a Retirement Village

Hi, Just planning to hold a death cafe in a Retirement village (which does have a cafe) and wondered if anyone else has done this? How did it go? The other suggestion I might follow up on is to hold one at a secondary school. Anyone done this? Would really ...

This was the first Death Cafe to be held north of the Auckland Harbour Bridge, in the rural community of Warkworth. Eight people met in the gallery space at Charlies Gelato Garden, around a coffee table sat on lovely comfy couches. I was incredibly blessed to have a delicious carrot cake donated by The Handy Food company, who are great supporters of hospice initiatives. And of course there was coffee and locally made icecream.  So all this provided the perfect setting for a relaxed and reasonably intimate conversation about death. We agreed for confidentiality of the group that we could share stories with our friends and families later ...

Practitioners question: Funeral directors at death cafes

I am about to hold my first Death Cafe in a few weeks.

I've been approached by some funeral directors who want to attend in a group. My initial thoughts are that this is not the target audience, but then I think just because they work with death I ...
