The objective of a death cafe is to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives. This is not a therapy or a grief group. This is a pop-up event to facilitate open discussion about deat...h and dying.
The idea comes from Bernard Crettaz, a Swiss sociologist, who conducted his first “Cafe Mortels” in France in 2010. The idea was picked up by Jon Underwood and Sue Barsky-Reid in London in 2011. Lizzy Miles, brought the Death Cafe brand to the United States in Columbus, OH, Karen Van Dyke brings Death Cafe to San Diego. And now Bernadette L Laster brings Death Cafe to Philadelphia and the surrounding suburban area. Death Cafes have been featured in USA Today, LA Times and the Huffington Post.
But who wants to talk about death? We believe that many of us do but often cannot find the means of addressing it with family and/or friends. We invite you to join us and take the first step towards that dialogue in a safe, secure and confidential atmosphere where like-minded individuals share your desire and curiosity about the end-of-life and its many peripheral issues.
Due to the nature of the conversation, we ask that there be no late arrivals. All are welcome.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
Love and service.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I aspired to inspire, joy, blessings, love and grace before I expired.
Thoughts for sharing:
I’ve had enough of sleepless nights,
Of my unspoken grief, of my tired wisdom.
Come my treasure, my breath of life,
Come and dress my wounds and be my cure.
Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi, From “I’ve Had Enough”

Death Cafe Philadelphia, a.k.a. Live <3 Laugh, was honored to host it's second event on September 14, 2013. The very first Death Café Philadelphia was held on July 13, 2013. Death Café Philadelphia gave birth to a second event because of popular demand. We had 22 participants at our event, each showed up with their own individual reasons for being there.
