About Mette Mikkelsen:
I am a mother, sister, economist, facilitator, and friend — and I’m deeply interested in how we can create communities and rituals in modern society that help us all to thrive.
I’m curious about people and practice, every day, having conversations that make a difference — conversations about the art of living, life’s rituals, ethics, and morality. Conversations where both parties grow wiser.
Lately, I’ve been exploring how we end our lives on Earth, including through an end-of-life doula certification from the University of Vermont and my work as a vigil volunteer with the Danish Red Cross.
I live in Copenhagen, Denmark with my partner, our son and daughter.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
For me, this focus on death is really about a focus on life – on how we choose to live while we are here.
Death reminds us that our time is limited, and that is precisely why we must live with awareness, presence, and love in the life we have been given.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I’d like people to remember me as someone who stood for: kindness, community, joy, curiosity, and courage.
Thoughts for sharing:
The Danish philosopher Villy Sørensen writes:
“There is life in death and death in life, and perhaps the most life in life, if death is part of it.”
