About Ileana Perez Diaz:

My name is Ileana, I migrated from Cuba over 30 years ago and have lived in Jacksonville for the past 5 years.

I am a certified Life Coach and Death Doula, a mother of two adult children, remarried for 18 years.  As I move into a new chapter of life, I find myself reflecting deeply on the passage of time and the questions that come up when we consider our mortality.   Having spent much of my life in the fast-paced world of Corporate America, I’ve learned the art of strategy and achievement.  Yet, in this quiet phase, I’m exploring new dimensions of existence, seeking purpose beyond titles and deadlines.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

In my culture, death is often a taboo subject, something we avoid talking about. But losing my brother-in-law and friend has shown me how vital it is to start the conversation. Being curious about death means questioning its mystery, its meaning, and how it shapes the way we live. Instead of fearing it, we can explore what it teaches us about love, legacy, and the value of each moment. Curiosity allows us to face mortality with openness and find peace in the inevitable, while embracing life with greater intention.

What would you like your legacy to be?

My legacy is one of courage, the courage to talk openly about death. In a world where it’s often avoided or feared, I want to be remembered as someone who broke the silence, creating space for honest conversations about mortality. By opening up about death, I hope to inspire others to confront their own fears, heal through vulnerability, and live with greater purpose. My goal is to make talking about death as natural as talking about life, so that future generations can navigate both with compassion and clarity.

Thoughts for sharing:

Death, like birth, is an extraordinary event and it’s crucial that we talk about it.
