About Adam van Heerden:
Adam is a psychologist, writer and world wanderer. He is captivated by the capacity of pilgrimage and intentional travel to broaden our perspectives and build bridges between people. Having encountered Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal, Adam is curious about how a more direct relationship to death might awaken us to the poignancy of life. Adam runs his own private psychology practice in Naarm (Melbourne) Australia.
What brings you to Death Cafe?
I am curious about how accepting the impernanance of life and being attentive to 'little deaths' each day, might enliven us, and prepare us for the inevitable 'big death' to come. I believe death has an immense power to cut through banality and remind us what is important in our lives, and I'm excited to be around those willing to relate to death in a less taboo way.
What would you like your legacy to be?
I would like my legacy to be laced with kindness. I would like people to say "he lived gracefully and was always preceded by his chuckle".
Thoughts for sharing:
“Emmanuel, what should I tell people about dying?” He said, “Tell them it’s absolutely safe!” He says it’s “like taking off a tight shoe.” Those two alone are a whole manual for dying. - Ram Dass
