About Seattle Death Guyz:

Seattle Death Guyz are the yin and yang of independent funeral officiants in Seattle, WA. Kateyanne Unullisi and Francis Lee have joined forces to help further the growing discussion - and comfort levels - on topics around death, dying and beyond. Francis and Kateyanne (independent of one another),  work deeply with grieving families to help co-create ceremony that is unique and heartfelt.

What brings you to Death Cafe?

As funeral celebrants, we love to talk about death! And we know a lot of people do too, but don't have a comfortable venue for it. We have supported other Death Cafes and the movement entirely, watching it spread across the world. We want to provide a great space for good conversation on an ageless topic. With cupcakes.

What would you like your legacy to be?

For people to start talking and keep talking about death. We talk about sex and violence and all kinds of taboo things. Let's get death out of the closet and in that, find ways to bring empowerment into our own lives, into thinking about whatever it is we need to be thinking about for ourselves and those we love. With cupcakes.

Thoughts for sharing:

How things can change --

I am done with great things and big plans, great institutions and big success. I am for those tiny, invisible loving human forces that work from individual to individual, creeping through the crannies of the world like so many rootlets, or like the capillary oozing of water, which, if given time, will rend the hardest monuments of pride.

-- William James (philosopher and physician)

Here's what we had to say afterwards: open and safe conversation, nurturing, honest, awakening, deep connections formed quickly, thoughtful and informative, low key. Oh the places we roamed - playing ukuleles in beautiful cemeteries, what we want for our own deaths, new and old ways to approach death, caring for our dead. Brownies, the homeys at ‘the Couth’, and little Luna in her chair. We want to do it again and again.

The recent Death Café, facilitated by Seattle Death Guyz Kateyanne Unullisi and Francis Lee, created a great environment for a generative conversation. The age range of folks present went from 30’s to 60’s, each sharing their current thoughts/experiences on Death.

Culled from our conversation is the following list of media titles - some movies, some books - that are apropos and sure-fire conversation makers about Death, Loss, and Dying:

-The Denial of Death. A 1973 work of psychology and philosophy by Ernest Becker. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 1974.

-I Thought My Father Was God: And Other True Tales from NPR ...
