Arrived flustered, late with batteries for my hearing aid exhausted. Then the thought occurred to me how do I find the death cafe group too embarrassed to ask for the death cafe group. Then I had inspiration asked for “any groups here tonight? Yes in the corner.

I could not believe my eyes four young people; timidly I asked is this the death cafe group and was reassured I had found the correct group.

We had a very interesting discussion on death and funerals, before I know it was time to leave. I am looking foewared to the next meeting. With fresh batteries and hopefully on time.

We arrived at 7pm and were increasingly pleasantly surprised by the flow of people into the café, which filled up before the advertised start time of 7.30pm.

We greeted people and invited them to make themselves name badges, speak to someone they hadn’t met before, and if they wanted to, to think of questions or topics that could be a starting point for a discussion of death, write these on small cards and drop in hat.

By 7.45pm the 31 people who truned up had all had a chance to order refreshments.  We welcomed everyone and recapped purpose of Daeth Cafes. We  invited them to ...

Here's a review of our Death Cafe by first timer John O'Donnell. Thanks John!

Following the The Dying Well Community Charter Launch Event, on the 19th March at the “Blues Ground”, which included a presentation by Carrie Weekes, on the Death Cafe movement, I went along out of idle curiosity to a  Death Cafe event organised by Carrie and her business associate Fran, (not their first).   It was held at the Coffin Works in Hockley Birmingham from 1.0 pm until 3.0 pm on Sunday 29th March 2015.

The Death Cafe movement, is a strictly not for profit organisation, set up by Londoner Jon Underwood ...

A write up of Marrickville Death Café – March, by Michele Knight

Our March Death Café dovetailed with the NSW State Election.  It was a busy day in the community at large as it was in Lazy Bones Lounge, with animated and varied discussion between people coming from all walks of life and experience.

As usual, people talked about what had brought them to Death Café, and how they had found out about the event either through word of mouth, social media, Meet Up, or one of the other on-line avenues I utilise.  People also talked about different events their lives, and one of the things that has become ...

A write up of Marrickville Death Café – February, by Michele Knight

Our first Death Café for 2015 welcomed the year in its usual location, Lazy Bones Lounge, in Marrickville, Sydney.  A combination of “old” and “new” faces escaping the heat of the supposed last day of Summer sat together in the now familiar overstuffed couches and eclectic surroundings to discourse on death, and of course to eat cake!  As the Death Café commenced, I couldn’t help but notice the contrast between what was taking place inside Lazy Bones Lounge with what was taking place outside; a vibrant community street festival.

It seemed to me that it was ...

Death Cafe write up: Death Cafe, Winchester, VA

Sitting around a large table under two skylights with sunshine streaming, eight bright and inquisitive people gathered on Easter Sunday to talk about life and death.

"Maybe we don't have to die if we would just learn to take care of each other and love."  This comment met with zero resistance and the notion quite intrigued us with possibility.

Viewing death as an organic, natural  experience creates a liberation from fear of it.

Meeting our own death and the death of others not from a detached, conditioned cultural perspective, but from the authentic self facilitates acceptance and ease.

As part of doctoral studies in Occupational Therapy  a ...

Once again, we had a turnout of 20 folks from around mid-coast Maine, to talk about death!  It was a wonderful setting and the group divided itself into 3 groups that stayed together til the end of the night.  I asked folks if they wanted to shift around, but it seemed to work out on its' own.  Cupcakes and warm tea & coffee helped everything be a comfortable Death Cafe.  I thank everyone for visiting and sharing their thoughts, caring and listening ....

Hi,

I've been running a death cafe for about a year now and I feel like the conversations have gotten stale.  So, I'm looking for some ideas on what others have done to bring life to their death cafe.

I have more questions that I'd like to ...

The first Death Cafe in Israel took place in Tel Aviv in February 2015.
It was an exceptionally cold, windy, dusty, rainy evening, so we were pleasantly surprised with the number of people who turned up in this weather: 25!
We were worried there would be moments of awkward silence, but I don't think there was a single minute of silence during the two hours long Death Cafe.
The attendees were divided into small groups - 4-5 people in each - and every 20 minutes were encouraged to switch places and sit with new people.
Spirits were high and as the event progressed, you could see how people loosened ...

Death Cafe write up: Tuonen Tupa Death Cafe

Saturday the 14th of March we talked about many things. Discussion started slowly about the hatred and guilt we feel towards death and the dead person. Moving on to suicides and euthanasia. All very interesting. But what made me write today, was the information of the death of one special person. Antti O. Arponen was not world famous, but in our little community he was well known. Representative in the city politisc and wrote over 50  sports related books and numerous articles still this year. He wanted to say his word about incurable illness and his upcoming death in the December 13th Tuonen Tupa Death Cafe just a ...
